In regards to a big telephoto I might just get a 1.4 extender for my 400 f5.6 for now. What does that take the fstop down to? I'll have to check what my camera min fstop for autofocus is.....

I had a 1.4x extender and it was rubbish! I got clearer pictures expanding the photo's in PS and using noise ninja etc to tidy it up.

Perhaps there was a problem with the combination of my 40D, 70-200 f2.8L, the extender and me :)

it's now up to 1.4X III (version 3) ... but yes, do some research, as always :D

The 70-200 F2.8 MkII and 1.4x/2x MkIII's are a big step up from the old versions. I don't own a ring flash but I've sold three of them in the last week.

I use a mt-24ex for macros at the moment.
Twin head flash unit that attaches to the front of the lens.

Not entirely 'what I shot today' The project has been a work in progress since I shot the trees last August, but while I had the shape of the image in my mind, I didn't have a shot I felt happy with for the foilage, so the previous version used the Photoshop CC generate Trees script. You are allowed up to 30% of an image to be computer generated in most PSNZ/Camera Club competitions, but I felt the old version was still compromised.

Then yesterday I noticed some nice light on a Moptop tree in our garden, so photographed that and did some more work on the image. It is not finished yet. I've tried to make the lighting more in keeping with the composited sunset behind the trees, but it is not reality, so it does not have to be accurate, but I will do some colouring of the foreground.

I have also expanded the canvas to show the entire outline of the trees. This is a point I heard Charlie Waite make when he was the main speaker at the 2011 PSNZ National Convention at North Shore. Complete, uninterrupted outlines, with no overlap of important image elements.

Easiest way is to use a stacking program like CombineZP, Helicon Focus, Zerene or something similar.
They can align and stack images automatically.

But Photoshop has been able to make a decent job of it for several versions now. Load into Photoshop layers. Select all layers. Edit > Auto align layers. Edit > Auto blend layers (using seamless tones and colours).
