But Photoshop has been able to make a decent job of it for several versions now. Load into Photoshop layers. Select all layers. Edit > Auto align layers. Edit > Auto blend layers (using seamless tones and colours).

thanks, that was what I was after. I use ACR and LR (yes I'm an amateur, and don't make a living out of pictures) and everytime I hear PS I tremble in fear like a high school kid allergic to calculus. (coz I find it complex and cannot understand the steps)

slowly I'm learning trick by trick. this seems to be easy enough for me to learn. which process decides to keep the focussed bit only - the auto align bit process or the auto blend process? sounds too simple to be true. (eg just to paint sunstars it's like 15 totally greek sounding steps and I can't tell where the stars will end up!)

I've run Photoshop workshops at three PSNZ National Conventions now, including an Advanced Photoshop workshop at last years National here in Marlborough. I try and tell people you don't need to learn it all at once, but you should concentrate on the bits that are useful to you, and things you will keep using, because it's one of those use it or lose it things. There are all sorts of really good tutorials out there now, and more coming all the time, and covering more areas of image creating using Photoshop.

Bert Monroy has some excellent titles out including a series of three called 'Dreamscapes'. I learned some very cool tricks from those. Bert also has 'how it was made' titles on the creation of his amazing Times Square illustration, and an almost as good similar series entitled Amsterdam Mist. They are out there if you look.

Also look for Ctrl Paint that has useful titles on things like perspective and sketching. Most people discover they can draw when shown how to. Other things to look for a Tuts Plus, Creative Live and Digital Tutors.

If you prefer working from books, then the Steve Caplin titles are my favourite on using Photoshop to create, manipulate and illustrate. 'How To Cheat at Photoshop', and '100% Photoshop' are his best titles, 'Art & Design with Photoshop' is useful, but not quite in the same class as the other two. He also has a newer book called 3D with Photoshop which I don't have a copy of.

I think firstly I need a desk, a desktop, a monitor and a mouse.

at the moment I use a laptop and painting with left hand holding left click and right finger moving trackpad is painful. I could use a mouse but the 15.6" screen is a bit small for my old eyes

If you are thinking long term, then consider getting a graphics tablet. People describe drawing with a mouse as like using a bar of soap. Personally I still prefer a mouse for tool selection anf fine work like placing points with the Pen tool, but not all mice work nicely for stuff like Photoshop. I currently use a Logitech Performance MX. It has excellent feel, and can be switched to precision more with a button on the mouse. And I would now hate to be without the extra mouse buttons like page up and page down.

I used an original Graphire for many years, but switched to an Intuos 4 a few years ago. The Intuos is nice, but the much cheaper Graphire did the job. If I had to replace my tablet now, I'd get an Intuos 5 Touch, because I rather think being able to use iPad type gestures on the tablet would be significant boost to your workflow. I only tend to use the Express Wheel on my Intuos 4, and mainly just for brush size.

Nice dramatic images. This one works best IMO, but I'm not sure it needs all that foreground. Try cropping the bottom up to the horizontal crack. Just my 2 cents worth.

Not easy to make a 12-24mm work on a full frame eh (I'm only guessing the lens didn't peek at the exif)

I dreamt of that lens when it was announced but then I did some tutorials on super wides - not many applications ... Need something in the foreground to make work. You selling the old 12-24?
