mdf: Great photos. Somewhat off topic, but what colour temperature / white balance did you guys use to get the red colour? I am a weekend clogger when it comes to photography. I can usually get the aperture and shutter settings right after some trial and error, but the white balance eludes me.

Ah no that's a good question. Mine was on Auto white balance so I'm not sure off hand what it ended up choosing, but I can check tonight and I'll edit this post with the value :)

Auto white balance might be hit or miss on this type of thing I suppose, but if you shoot RAW that can be changed later on a PC if the camera chose the wrong value.

I used cloud because I wanted to emphasise the redness.

That just seemed like the best option for the shot.

One problem with photographing the moon, from another thread elsewhere, is that it's a pain with a long lens because you've only got about a minute each time to get it before it's moved out of frame unless you've got a tracking mount. And my tripod is meant for general stability/shot repeatability for things like HDR images, not micro-movements to track very distant objects, so I spent more time adjusting than photographing.

robjg63:

I am in Auckland and kept popping outside to have a look from around 7.20pm until finally giving up at about 11pm.

It was a clear view of the moon every time I looked, but apart from the obvious 'shadow' from the eclipse, it seemed to lack much in the way of 'blood'....

Just went a bit dull.

Methinks 'blood moon' was overselling it somewhat.

I did the same, then fell asleep for about 40 minutes on the couch during the height of it.  Hooned back outside when I woke up at about 11:25 and the redness was fairly apparent then - maybe it was more apparent after because like you I also noticed that before the eclipse it didn't look very red at all.

I couldn't seem to edit my previous post, but I checked and it was 4450K. It certainly becomes a lot more red if I turn the colour temperature up, but I think the camera's auto white balance in this case got it pretty realistic.

you don't set WB on the camera. if you want to play with WB you shoot RAW and adjust WB in post processing
