Hi guys,

Thanks for all the replies! I ended up getting a Canon 600D with twin lens kit. Had a play with the Nikon D3200 and the 600D. The Canon felt a bit more user friendly to a newbie.

Have picked up a couple of intro to DSLR photography books from the library. Now time to learn!

The only downside is that if you get into it you will now start drooling over the range of expensive and cool ad-ons you can buy for the camera, while your credit card whimpers in the background...........

Wow thats amazing, may I ask what kind of accessories would be beneficial to start with? Obviously I want to get to grips using the camera before going wild with the credit card. But I'd be interested to know what would be good to start with. Cheers.

well it just so happens that there is dog poo in our compound (i want to shoot that dog - but that's besides the point) so i took out my patch job macro set up (i ain't paying $2000 for a canon 180mm 3.5L) - it is poorly focused (it is about 0.5-1mm back focussed) and because of poor light and lack of a ring flash I had to use a less than ideal aperture ...

anyway to your question:
you do not want to buy anything at this stage.

you want to learn how/why to use Tv/Av/M.
you want to learn to compose your shot/perspective/natural lighting/etc and select a manual focus point - because your camera has less than ideal peripheral autofocus points i would not select any of those on their own (they are never correct - sometimes they get close but never nailing it), if at all possible use the centre focus point only if you want to manual select.

when you understand all that then learn about what different lenses do for you, and what the different accessories do for you. I see on trademe lots of people selling tonnes of sets of stuff they bought a few months ago because it probably just overwhelmed them and they start to feel poor after that. there are lots of other stuff you could do/get like shoot video, post processing/shoot raw, tripod, hack your camera with magic lantern (that's the one way i get good pictures from the 600D when autofocus lets you down), flashes, etc etc
