I'm going to Europe in 1 week and a half and just realised I want a good camera to use. I've got my iPhone 4 and have always just used that but I'm wanting something better for this trip. I can't afford any more than $200 and I've looked on some of the retailers' websites and I've found the Canon A2400IS for $149 at JB but I'm not really sure what I should be looking for in a camera. I'd appreciate any suggestions as to what everyone thinks is the best camera 〜$180 can buy.
The models change constantly but here's some quick thoughts on P&S cameras: - Date of first release is as good a guide to image quality as you'll find. Newer is better. - Less megapixels is better. The smaller the pixels for a given sensor size the more noise per pixel. Once you get over about 4-6 megapixels it's just about marketing. - Optical image stabilisation is between very useful and essential. - Canon, Nikon, Panasonic Lumix, maybe Samsung are worth considering.
weww.dpreview.com is a good review site. The model numbers vary between countries.
Travel wise I've always preferred a unit that can take standard AA batteries, otherwise you need adapters to ensure you're always able to charge the thing.
