I've been tasked with sorting out wife's and I photo collections, not only merging the two together but sorting out duplications etc. Is there some software that makes this easy? Doesn't have to be free, don't mind a small fee. Must be able to sort the files out into helpfully named folders but also 'tag' photos (London, Fiji etc). Had a bit of play with Google's Picasa but found it lacking...
You could try something like Lightroom. Adobe lets you download their software and use it on a trial basis (free, and not credit card details required) for 30 days. Lightroom is used by many of the pros to sort and manage photos. Naming, importing, identifying duplicates etc,,,,
Just a couple of warnings. You will need to work exclusively in Lightroom (if you rename photos outside of it as an example, lightroom looses the file association), if later you decide to no longer use lightroom, no worries you will still have your traditional folder structure you can browse / edit. Another heads-up, it takes some getting used to knowing how to get lightroom to do what you want to do - the plus though is that Adobe has a tonne of good tutorials online, and there are also a great deal of them on youtube.
I suggest to also look at Adobe Photoshop Elements.
Used in the same way as Lightroom as described by Fed but is the entry level version and cheaper to buy. Has all the features you require unless you are a professional.
$180 for Elements vs $250 for lightroom.
