Over the last three weeks I’ve printed off almost 500 copies of the photos I’ve taken since I started on my photography journey in June.

That’s 500 prints of different sizes I’ve got lying around in my room doing absolutely nothing other than collecting dust. So I thought what the heck, why not put those prints to good use and share them with as many people as I can?

Yesterday I went around the Auckland CBD sticking the photos up where I originally took them, on the back of each photo is a little message explaining to people that it’s totally ok to take the photo home with them.

Links to the 5 I put up yesterday:

The photos are inside of cheap frames from The Warehouse. The backs are signed, and each is numbered to show how many of those prints I’ve made so far.

What I hope will happen is people will see the photos on the walls and share in that memory with me. Some won’t enjoy it, others will vandalise it, the vast majority will ignore it - but that’s all ok, because this was incredibly fun to do.

I’ve only put up five so far, but I’ll be putting up more over the next coming weeks. If you do see one let me know, maybe take a photo with it and send it in, or if you like it take it home and share the idea.

So what do you think of my little idea to share my photos of Auckland with Aucklanders?

I like it, I like it a lot.
Might I suggest you pop over to publicaddress.net and mention this on their Capture photo threads. I know it will appeal to them, as well as geekzoners...

Hey thanks, it's been a lot of fun. Trying to get a bit more attention to it so maybe other people join in too. What would be awesome if we started seeing pop-up art galleries in Auckland's (or any other town in NZ) streets and alleys with people leaving their creations for others to enjoy.

It's kind of like tagging, only if the property owner doesn't like the image they can just take it off and stick it in the bin.

Good suggestion with the publicaddress thing. I read the blogs there all the time, but have no idea how to submit something - and there are no contact details from the homepage.

I love the concept - the tagging thing is exactly what occurred to me, and that its the sort of thing anyone interested can get on board with. A way to add to the artistic side of a city without costing a bomb.

Pop into the forums at publicaddress.net/capture the comments there are enabled for uploading your own pix, and they are masters at the art of thread derailing. Or ask Russell directly if he'd be interested in a guest post from you - he has email links at the bottom of his Hard News posts.

An update on the photos:

3/5 of the photos have been taken (Musical Chairs, Rainy Alley, Weighed Down)

Of those three, two of the takers have emailed me and thanked me (which is awesome).

So there's two left out there. "Dear Diary" which should be on the corner of Vulcan and High Street, and "The Pianist" which should be under the piano silo at Wynyard Quarter (this one is an 8x10 so it's pretty cool).

The coolest part is actually receiving an email with thanks...

In the clouds [Photobomb] - Mt Eden, Auckland

My first five photobombs were a marvellous success. Three of the five were picked up by new owners who emailed to thank me. The other two are missing, presumed lost to the aether, but 3/5 is not bad at all.

I went to Mt Eden to put up two more photos last night. The photos I’ve bombed are of another photographer and a family, both were up at Mt Eden with me during a cloudy rainy sunset.

We were the only people on that mountain for a good half hour, it was surreal - like we were looking down at the city from Olympus through a veil of clouds.

Mt Eden is one of Auckland’s many dormant (but not extinct) volcanoes, and also the city’s highest summit. It’s also known by its Maori name Maungawhau, and was once the site of  a fortified Maori village known as a “pa”.

It’s a bit of a tourist cliche, but Mt Eden gives you views of the city and Waitemata harbour that you just can’t find anywhere else. I recommend if you do go visit, drive/walk up just before sunrise and sunset - no matter what the weather you’re in for a show.

Cool, I've made it to The Herald! I've had my work on PetaPixel, Laughing Squid, and Lomography - can add the Herald to the list too.

If anyone here is going to Armageddon over the weekend I'll be leaving photos around there too. If you can track me down on Friday and Sunday I'll give you a couple of prints in exchange for a hi-5. It's a pretty good deal.
