I am going to the US at the end of next month and want to get a camera to use while I am there.

We currently have a Canon 40D that we use mainly for equestrian photography, I love this camera as it has a high fps rate that is needed for good horse photos.

The new camera will be used for grand canyon, vegas, Disneyland etc. and I was planning on selling it when I return.

love my current camera to bits so I will be staying with Canon.

I have been looking at the T3, T3i, T4i and 60D.

If I went for the 60D I'd probably sell the 40D when I got home but if I got one of the others I would sell them.

I am by no means a photographer but like the results that I can get with a DSLR over a point and shoot.

Does anyone have an opinion which way is best.

T3 = $279
T3i = $429
T4i = $494
60D = $629

Those DSLRs will all create photos that are much the same. Selling a brand new camera with warranty will obviously get a better price than a lightly used one. Once something's out of the box and used personally I pay 50% at most of the new price.

Have you considered a Sony RX-100? Huge sensor, raw format. It's much more practical to carry than a DSLR, I take the Sony and leave my Nikons at home for holidays now.

Agree with the RX100 notion. I am looking to go to USA in july and would be considering making an investment in this camera. I have heard very good things about it.

But if that is not an option, have you taken a look at getting a 7D? From a 40D, a 7D would be an awesome upgrade and you should be able to get that for about 1k here in nz.

Just FYI there are very strong rumours going aorund at the moment that the 70D has an impending release (what that means in terms of your time frames I'm not sure, but I thought you may like to know). People are saying late march/early april is a possibility. In the past Canon have renewed the 'XXD' line about about every 18 months but it has been about 3 years for the 60D, so it's definitely "overdue" in that sense.

In saying that, I have the 60D personally and it is a great camera - still does everything I need and more.

70D should be somewhere between 7D and 5D mk 3 ... who knows what canon guys are thinking!

they will add some features close to mk3 and then keep some specs very old so that you have no idea what to buy!

I doubt the 70D would be positioned over the 7D. Canon are very big on segmented marketing, unlike Nikon who tend to make the best camera they can at a price point.

I have looked at the specs of the RX100 but it is not really floating my boat.

Looking at everything i am leaning towards the cheaper option, as i don't think the 60D is right replacement for the 40D we have as we really need the higher fps of the 40D

Thanks for your input so far guys.

Btw if the sony had a better optical zoom I would have probably gone with that.

I would find a wider lens on the RX100 much more useful than longer. I find I can usually stand closer, but quite often I can't back up enough.

Just a reminder that if you buy a Canon overseas there is no International warranty on it and it would need to go back to the country on the warranty card to be repaired.

I have taken this into consideration, which is why I am leaning towards the T3 as it will do all I need it to, I can buy the lenses I need for my other camera and sell the surplus when I get back. Even if I loose $300 because the body craps out it will be worth having it while I am on holiday.

Rather than a DSLR, have you considered Micro 4/3 in the form of the new Lumix GH3?

Weathersealed magnesium alloy body, 16MP, superfast autofocus, sharp f2.8 zooms available, shoots broadcast quality video without blocking the eyelevel finder etc etc.

I have one as a backup for my Nikon D3s based kit which I am taking on the road in SE Asia for 2 months in June & July.

The GH3 and two f2.8 zooms covering the equivalent of 24mm - 200 mm at constant aperture weigh less than a DSLR and one lens....!

Hi All,

Thanks to all that offered advise, I ended up getting a Canon 1100D (T3) from Trademe (still has local warranty) I got it quite cheaply in as new condition.

I was concerened with possible warranty issues with purchasing overseas.

I looked at P&S options but nothing tickled my fancy really and the RX100 was a bit expensive.

So far I am really happy with my purchase.

I bought an 1100D at the end of last year (my modest entry into the world of DSLRs) and am quite happy with it. I just have to be aware that any EF-S lenses I buy won't work on a full size camera if I decide to upgrade in the future.

If you get from the USA you may not get your warranty honoured here in NZ, if you do consider yourself lucky. Maybe a bit cheaper there yeah. All camera are generally the same quality IMO, low end models inherit technology from more $$ models, so a cheap model might provide better IQ than a expensive one that was maybe 1 generation and a half ago .. You mentioned speed for horse photog - that would point you to a intermediate model but as a hobbyist many may find the Rebels find too. Some of the photo geeks I know at clubs etc in the Canon World like the 40D or 50D, 60D cameras without yet going to the 7D or 1D series ... I heard that online the 40D are still being snapped up by Photojournalists yes in second hand b/c it does the job so good still unless they need better high ISO performance that is of course.
