Can anyone recommend something that I can download my memory cards into as a backup while I'm on holiday? CF and SD, micro SD a bonus. I don't take many photos on holiday, I doubt I'd fill my 32GB memory card. Camera is Sony RX100, 20MB raw files.

Just buy more memory cards?
They're cheap as chips these days...

Likely the cost of said device will get you another 32GB or 64Gb card

I know they're cheap, I want a backup. A memory card may be as good a backup as anything, but I have no way of copying images onto it.

I have 100GB of CF memory cards, that's what my pro cameras take.

does your camera have USB? if so why not get an OTG cable and a portable 2.5" hard drive or just a stick drive.

You can get powered drives from what I recall

Sounds good... do they exist for the S4?

The RX100 has USB, an I have an S4. What's an OTG cable? I have a 2.5" USB 3.0 750GB drive I could take if I can get images onto it.

A friend of mine posted a link to this wifi hub/battery/backup device. It seems to have too many features for that price, and no single clear function, a bit of a mish mash. Bit wary.

Sorry, don't know - I think there was one that worked with iPhone/iPad, but never used one...

The Ravpower device on amazon looks perfect for your needs - if you read the reviews, one talks specifically about the ability to copy from SD card to USB device

The other option would be a netbook - I always seem to have a netbook or laptop with me on holiday and routinely backup my cameras to it during the holiday

There are plenty of card readers for the S4 etc. Or get the OTG cable and just plug the camera into the phone and use something like astro file manager to move them over to the inbuilt micro SD reader.

Not sure of anything that can do it automatically, but there probably exists.

32gb microsd card in an adapter then you can put it directly into the s4 ?

Then there are no cables to worry about

but this doesn't produce a backup - I think the OP's aim is to get his photos onto at least two forms of storage while still on holiday

Even by plugging the camera to the phone by USB OTG, it means you'd need a big enough SD card in the phone to hold all the phone's stuff plus the 32GB from the camera

I was envisioning uploading it once it was on the phone

I did this using my galaxy s3, a usb otg cable, an sd card reader and a 32 gig usb drive when on holiday last year. I've got a 32 gig micro sd card in the phone that I used as a half way point and I did incremental backups once a day so I didn't need a huge amount of space.
If I'd had a usb hub with me I could have skipped the intermediate step but space was at a premium so the extra step was ok for me.

Maybe I'll look at the Ravpower more closely, I think there's a manual online. It probably is the simplest solution.

Oh an "on the go" cable like this one? So I could plug the camera into the phone and copy the files over, then copy then say to a portable hard drive? A little cumbersome, but that'd work.

Going from camera to phone to USB hard drive would be a bit cumbersome, like I said above. Possible though.

I had imagined just putting my memory card into a dedicated device that copied the images to a dedicated internal hard drive - one of these types of things. Of course they're not exactly cheap, though not too bad.

Yep that sort of thing. Shame all the places they say have it don't seem to, at least not online.

Yeah that sort of thing. I didn't know you could do that with a phone. I could buy a $10 cable and copy the images to a portable hard drive. Does the S4 have enough power to spin up a 750GB USB3 hard drive?
