I have lots of photos I'm thinking of sharing with friends and family. I don't want to limit the resolution / re-encoding by the upload site. I also don't want anyone else to see it apart from the people I share with.

Is this even possible? I have flickr but I only upload non personal stuff in case it gets used by a billboard in the Czech republic

Yeah, it's possible. From memory I was able to send invites to family to a private set I wanted to share.

is it possible to make it not possible to forward usable links to other people?

if they start forwarding my links (someone is bound to) then that will very quickly spread

maybe i'm too paranoid

If you want something to stay private don't put it on the internet.

Yeah you can. Couple of ways.  I fyou family have accounts you can set them as family and they can be a contact of yours.

But you an just upload all an private "Only visible to me" they call it.  Then create things called guest passes, these are links to either a single photo or to a set.  These can be expired at a later date.
