In our house we have a media PC, a laptop, an iPhone, an iPad and an Android phone, as well as a digital camera.

The iPhone, iPad, Android phone and camera all take photos and I'm looking for a suitable method of storing and syncing all the devices so that:

1) All photos are stored locally and able to be viewed from any device
2) All photos are uploaded and synced automatically

(Excluding the cameras for both points obviously - this would need to be done manually)

Ideally the media PC becomes the 'hub', and others can sync and view from it.

I'm thinking this is not an uncommon situation in today's household - perhaps others can share their methods??

Perhaps a cloud account would be the answer??

Do these require loading the full contents of the folder onto a phone/smart device? Wouldn't want to put 15GB of photos onto one of these.

Was also wondering if there was a specific cloud app for photos with tagging, albums etc type features?

The dropbox app on a phone uploads all the photos to a dropbox account but doesn't download them all. You can browse the thumbnails on the device and download any you want. An app like dropsync (which is awesome) give you many more options. For example using a hardware device I uploaded 20GB of photos from my camera to my phone and uploaded them to dropbox using hotel wifi when I was away for a few weeks using dropsync.

On the PC you install the full dropbox client which downloads all the images from dropbox to the PC.

You can find any number of websites doing collections of photos, tags, etc, or you can use any number of programs on a PC. Picasa is one that's free simple and well known.

Buy an Eyfi SD Card (not the mobi ones) for your camera. Its software will allow all photos from your camera to be copied to your computer.

A byproduct is the mobile apps for IOS (and I believe andoid) which allow the camera rolls on your ipad/iphone to copy photos to the same computer

Works good. My SLR goes to my server, mu ipad, my iphone and the wifes iphone. Each device can have it's own path, and own rules.

OneDrive is cross platform so you can download apps on whichever OS you use across various devices. Also 15GB free storage and additional storage is cheap. The app can also automatically backup your camera roll if you want it to

I like the idea of the eyefi card - will look into it.

Have just discovered that I get 50GB of free storage with Dropbox with the Samsung Galaxy S5 I bought recently - so am going to give that a go as the central hub for storage.

Then I was thinking maybe I could use a photo management app on top - but started looking around and found this:

That dropbox storage lasts for 2 years of something like that.

Also the eyefi card solution is only good if your main pc (the server) has good backup practices. But there's nothing stopping you pushing all photos to your computer - then using dropbox/google drive/<insert cloud storage here>

I've been tracking the progress of Google Photos for a while, it's main drawback for me has been the lack of ability for multiple users to add to joint accounts. Looks like there's an update coming for this soon!

I went Dropbox because of the free 25G I got with my HTC phone and the camera upload app very useful.

Then I discovered the dropbox client on my Synology NAS which I found good for copying big files to dropbox pro overnight via adsl2 so I dont need to keep my main pc on for hours and hours, just copy to folder from pc and leave it. Also has full copy of all "dropboxed" files rather than on my pc.
