I had been planning on upgrading to the Canon 70d early this year, but for some reason I was expecting a new model to be released and then to buy it when the price was reduced.

Looks like there are no new models coming out this year???

Am I best to buy now while Canon have their $100 Summer cashback offer?

I was hoping to have it by the middle of this year, so not in too much of a hurry.

$1448 today at Noel leeming ($1348 with cashback) for the 70d body.

50D / 60D / 70D are all basically the same, no really significant differences between them. Will a new model come out before June? Maybe. Will it make better photos? Probably not significantly. The cameras I shoot with professionally (Nikon D700) is a 7 year old design - the images are still great.

Buy when something that will do what you want is cheap, like now.

Yep.  My go to camera was seven years old last November, and my second body is five years old.  I will probably upgrade when a replacement for the Canon 1DsMK3 comes along with a high pixel count, (my hobby work is all composite and digital art, so the more detail the better).

no. 70D is different from 60D. it's not the same, massively different and superior. will it give better pictures? well i gues you and i know it depends on the skill of the user to make use of those features

20% discount over easter. if you can wait that long. otherwise go parallel import or trademe, but risk warranty issues.

a new model has been released, it was called the 7D mark II. expect an 80D sometime next year. but in reality nobody knows. it's not like a new car model where everybody knows.

Meanwhile practice with the 600D. Otherwise the 70D becomes a white elephant

What features does it have that will let you take better pictures? Honestly have no idea, I don't really keep up with consumer cameras, or any cameras really, I just take photos. Touch screen and WiFi maybe handy, but won't help photos. I don't even use the menus on my cameras, I set them up once and only use external controls - that's practical with 60D/70D but not the 600D so much.  7D AF is a nice feature in theory, but 7D AF is what made me switch to Nikon. More pixels = worse image quality usually, and bigger files, with no practical improvement in image quality.

Still if I was going to buy either I'd probably buy the newest one. No reason not to. The 600D won't be the limiting factor in an amateur photographers ability to take photos.

I would expect to see 4k video being introduced, as many of these DSLs are looking very dated with their video specs. I use video a lot on mine. I am tempted by the Lumix FZ1000 with it's 4 k video, and more compact form factor. Problem is that isn't a interchangeable lens camera, but the lens looks reasonable, and it has good reviews.

I don't own a 70D but for some enthusiasts these help

- Flip screen for video with interesting perspectives. When shooting at ground level you don't have to lie on the mud
- Flip screen for macro you no longer have to squat down and get haemorrhoids
- More and more accurate AF points for better AF in shallow DOF like sharp bird eyes with an 800mm lens
Just to name a few

Just because your 7D gave you grief and you don't shoot things that other people do doesn't mean you should belittle others

Not belittling others at all, I never referenced any person. I was talking about a technical capability that didn't work well for me, which incidentally was despite multiple attempts at servicing and calibration by Canon Professional Services.

Also look at dedicated camera retailers....

I know I get better pricing by a long shot especially on new glass
Take the 70-200 F4 IS Lens - $2099 from Noel Leeming -- $1800 from Photo & Video

Photo & Video in Christchurch are listing the 70D Body cheaper and that's the standard list price I know they do cheaper if you talk to them

going rate on trademe is around $900 under 1 year old. (canon offers 2 yr warranty). with the 20% discount (assuming price doesn't fall - there was once NL put the price up 2 weeks before their 20% sale! - in 3 months) it will be $1158.
