Hi,

I have a Canon EOS 600D, it works fine without an sd card in it but when i put one in it won't turn on and i have to take the sd and battery out to get it to work.

Does anyone know how tofix this?

Yeah, it was flashed with magic lantern earlier but then I had some other issues with the camera and ended up formatting the SD card and didn't put ml on it.

that's your problem. the camera has ML firmware and needs a ML card to boot. put ML on your card. you need it to reflash your camera if you wish to remove ML. if you can't figure it out go ask the ML forums.

Hey, that's interesting information and good to know.  Thanks for the heads up.

No, but camera club members come to me when they need sensors cleaned, or they can't get their new 7D2 AF working nicely, or or camera related problems generally like updating firmware (I did a Fuji XT1 last week) Which is OK a lot of the time, but I certainly didn't know the issues around Magic Lantern needing to boot from the SD card.

I've looked at CHDK firmware for a G10 and G1X, but didn't have the nerve to try it, and I use dedicated video cameras for most of my video, but do use a 1DMK4 for low light.  Bottom line is that it is good to keep your photography knowledge base as up to date as possible, but I rather think I am being overtaken lately, by a super keen 18 year old who has set his heart on becoming a photojournalist.  This is the same lad who wore out a 6D shutter in two months.  (I did his FB banner for him, but some of the detail is lost at the FB resolution).

FB banner requires a resolution of 851 x 315 And file size of under 99kb at the moment (till such time they decide to "update" their policies). [there are other undisclosed requirements because even then what you upload is not what you get, but that's as close as I am aware of]

His photos are not bad for a shutter bug.

ML is a weird thing, it could usually boot without a ML card but sometimes it doesn't. I guess it's because it's reverse engineered.

So if I just download from here: http://builds.magiclantern.fm/#/ and extract everything from the zip into the sd card it will work fine?

that's the page for nightly builds. it really depends on what version your camera was installed on. my guess is 2.3. (there were only 2 versions in the past - 2.3 and one before that.

anyway the page you linked to says this

Installation

You cannot use this package for first install. Download the old v2.3, install it, then replace the files with the ones from the nightly build

make your SD card bootable on that

cross your fingers

*if it doesn't work, create a thread on magic lantern and ask them for advice

it seems to suggest your card just needs a "quick format" on a computer, and see if it works.

if it doesn't, put all the files into the card AFTER you did the step above.

if it doesn't work, ask magic lantern forum.

*disclaimer: this is what I deduce from reading the wiki. so it's only my semi educated guess. if you want to be sure ask the ML forums
