I was told today that both Canon and Nikon have advised dealers of a price hike due to currency shifts - no doubt the other manufacturers will be doing the same.

It's a good time to buy if you have anything that was on your list. Might be a while before west the dollar significantly up again. There are also a few rebate schemes around.

There could be far bigger price rises if the Trans Pacific Partnership bans parallel importing.

This is very unlikely. It is obviously written by major brands to assist in mining profits from the colonies, but no sovereign nation state would ever agree to that. Well, not us anyway.

Unless your sovereign nation state is already run by a man who long ago sold his soul to the multinationals.

When I bought my first Nikon I saved 50% by buying from the US, but they came down not long after and I got my second in NZ. Buying overseas is often cheaper, even accounting for paying GST. Support is often more important for professionals.

If they put up their prices, they are likely going to sell less, so it is a double edged sword. My next camera is unlikely to be either a canon or nikon, but these prices rises will likely affect all brands, as the NZ dollar weakens, and applies to anything that is imported.

Nikon get round that by only honouring the warranty in the US or NZ depending on where you bought it. In the EU, they got told to poke that and must honour the warranty in any EU state regardless of which one you bought the camera in.

Oddly, for lenses they will honour the warranty wordwide!

I'd never buy a parallel imported camera - the manufacturer won't honour the warranty.

The local prices would be much higher if not for the parallel imported alternatives as they were before people started parallel importing cameras.

The retailer though has to honour the CGA on a parallel imported camera, which often provides more protection. But if it is for business, then you don' t get that coverage.
