We find we are increasingly using iPhones for family videos.  Other than optical zoom, the old video recorder just can't compare for quality or convenience.

Problem is I cannot figure out a way (free or cheap) to do some basic editing of the .mov files once downloaded onto PC.  All I am looking for is an equivalent to Windows Movie Maker, a simple title, ability to trim and join, and perhaps one or two options on export.

I have tried several options converting the .mov file to .mp4 using Handbrake, but Windows Movie Maker just won't read it, seems to load OK but comes out blank with just the sound.  I could do it on the phone but spare memory is limited (it's a work phone thus the smallest available).

GZ search doesn't really give me an answer.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

couple of months old, but i don't know if you've found a solution...

first off, i was under the impression that windows movie maker supports mov files???

if you're happy to keep wmm as your editor and really only after converting your videos to a readable format, you might want to give freemake video converter a go.  i use it to convert video files into a format that is readable by my tv off a usb drive.

Editing on a Mac using iMovie or Final Cut Pro will work. I believe iMovie also works in an iPad, not cheap options, but will solve your problem.

I've had success with Format Factory, at converting between various movie formats - you could use that to convert to say WMV then use WMM

Will give those converters a go.

Windows MM does not read .mov files.  Shame as that would be an easy option.  I was looking at the software that accompanies the Go-Pro but at first glance that uses proprietary formats as well.

It may be just as easy to use an app on the device.

could have sworn i posted a reply to this earlier, but here goes...

i remember using wmm to fiddle with mov files on an old pc some years back but couldn't remember how i got it going, so i dug in a little.  looks like movie maker would/might be able to handle *.mov files if you have a codec installed.

i installed:
1. http://www.codecguide.com/download_k-lite_codec_pack_mega.htm, and the update
2. http://www.codecguide.com/klcp_update.htm

and can confirm that WMM Version 2012 (Build 16.4.3528.0331) is able to work on <sample_iTunes.mov>.  sorry haven't got any other mov files on hand at the moment.

something to try anyway.

just be wary when installing k-lite as it bundles a bit of annoying free software.  do not use the default installation option, but choose what you want to install, i.e. leave the crap out.

Unfortunately videos ending with the file extension .mov are not all the same flavour inside the pack. I haven't had experience with Windows editing s/w, but would agree that you could probably use WMM after downloading a codec, but would also put in a vote for using the iMovie app on your device. The app is offered for free on devices newer than approx 2013 (I think) and after a bit of a learning curve and dealing with a smallish screen, it can create some slick productions - adding titles/themes, separate soundtrack from music on the device, sound effects or voiceover, fade in/out, transitions, mix of stills and video, speed change, colour effects... plus export at different quality settings to the device or many other destinations including Dropbox. Have a crack!

Is there any reason you can't simply edit the movies on the iPhone itself?

Yes been playing around with the app and agree its probably the easiest solution short of purchasing an Apple computer.  Now to talk the boss into a bigger phone with more than just the basic memory capacity.

I sense a request for an iPhone 6S Plus on the cards....might as well go all out and request an iPad Pro as well, editing on that would be fun!

Firstly insufficient memory, only have a smaller capacity phone.  Secondly I am typically looking to merge a number of different files/sources together to create a montage or story, including inserting stills.  I figured that would be easier to do with more accuracy on a computer than on a 5" screen with my fat fingers.  I expect my budget (nil) isn't enough :-) and I am going to have to break out the charm to release the purse strings from SWMBO.

I can just imagine the boss ROFL on that one.  Nice thought though.  I think a 6 might be doable...
