Sorry if that's a really dumb question.

 

I've been in many rooms where there is a projector dangling from the ceiling, but it's only now that it occurs to me to wonder how....
How do you connect your presentation device to one?

 

I'm going to presume a ladder is not required.

That can depend on the install. Often there is a display panel nearby that lets you control the projector along with matching ports on a wall. Ie, HDMI/VGA etc
The more basic may just have long cable runs coming out of a hole in the wall.

Usually that is the case, sometimes they all go back to the lecturn or somewhere near by with a scaler/switcher device to let someone running the show cut to a static logo while the presenter is getting their act together so you don't see their desktop etc.
