I came across these guys the other day,

web licence plate recognition

They have managed to create a web-based application that can use your camera on your phone to read a NZ plate, the technology is call ALPR (Automatic Licence Plate Recognition). It's actually pretty accurate.

I was thinking of doing some similar myself but not sure how to approach it, as I have some reasonable web skills. Just looking for some insight, really want it to be web based.

I suspect all its doing is reading the plate then hitting up someone like CarJam (or whatever APi they use) for the car details........  seriously though, who is going to find this useful in their daily lives ?

Just as fast to type carjam.co.nz and enter the plate.

It says they have their owns sources, I had a look on their home page https://www.mydrive.co.nz and you can just type in a plate in like normal. I was really just interested in how the ALPR was tied into the web camera.

Presumably this is a competitor to CarJam.

There's a few out there, think they're all accessing the same source.

Edit: Where does the information in the reports come from? | CARJAM
