Hiyas,

Ive been asked to look for 2-3 tripods that would be suitable for use with a video camera along the lines of a Canon HFS21 - we want something sturdy that isnt knocked over easily etc. It will be used primarily in a smallish room so its footprint cant be too big really...

Anyone have any suggestions ? Cost isnt a huge issue at this point in time, but obviously want to be realistic as well....so im not looking at the $50 DSE ones but dont want to be looking at the $1000 ones either ;)

TIA

XPD / Gavin

If you aren't going to be taking it out anywhere windy then it's not a big deal getting a big arse one, the one thing i would be more inclined to advise you to look at would be the tripod head. These will allow different things like smooth panning, maybe a ball head for all sorts of angles... the options are endless. Where in NZ are you located? Chch? then go to photo video in merivale mall, wgtn? then go to wellington photographic on vivian (I think?) or maybe photo warehouse in town. It would be best to take the camera into the store and try some heads out and get a better idea of what type of action you need it to have.

EDIT: I've been super happy with a manfrotto tripod bought through Adorama and it has a photographic ball head on it rather than a video head. Don't be sucked into carbon, alu or cast steel is what you need.

EDIT2: The alternative spelling of arse (a$$) is blocked, crazyness.

Great advice to ensure there are no unforeseen clashes between your camera/s and any physical features of the tripod that might not mate very well.  Camera shops are definitely a good place to start.
