Screens outside are all but invisible. Here comes mirasol, available commercially early in 2011. My prediction is it will be a huge winner. It will enable screens to actually be seen outside. All those advertisements showing happy people smiling around lap-top computers, pretending to be looking at the screen, might actually show something real.
A search of Geekzone for "mirasol" gave nothing. So I suppose this is the first mention of it.
Not only does it actually enable screens to be seen, and the brighter the better because it works on reflected light, not emitted light, it also doubles the battery life [give or take a bit]. The image change rate is fast too so good quality video is easy. The mirasol people say the price will be similar to regular displays so my concern that they would cost some stupid amount seems unfounded. I will be buying a cyberphone with it. It's hopeless trying to use screens outside. People hold their cameras up to take a photo and can't see what they are taking.
Indoors they are dull, so good lighting is needed, as with reading a newspaper. http://www.mirasoldisplays.com/mobile-display-imod-technology
So there's a heads-up. I have only seen them on YouTube etc so far but they look pretty good.
