Can anyone suggest the easiest way to playback video files from the Canon EOS cameras on the PS3 without transcoding?

The PS3 does not support the mov files that the canon uses but it is my understanding that they can be re-wrapped without transcoding the video so that they can be played back.

The canon files are H.264 which the PS3 does support.

Renaming doesn't work and I've tried ffmpeg but the output files won't play on the PS3.

There have been reports that Quciktime PRO will convert, but just as many posts saying it doesn't work so I'm not going to waste my money unless someone can confirm or test for me.

Any help would be appreciated... giving the popularity of these devices I'm sure it must have been solved by someone who values a quick high quality result.

I've used MP4box in the past to remux mov (with H.264 and mp3 I think) to mp4 or use YAMB if you're not comfortable with the command line.

+1 to YAMB. It seems to handle most compatible files nicely.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had tried YAMB, but the Canon records Linear PCM audio and I wasn't able to configure YAMB to convert it to a PS3 format as part of the process... YAMB reports the audio stream as "not configurable for creation" and I can't see any settings to convert it.

I am happy to use command line if it will work so perhaps that will be an option unless I'm missing something with YAMB?

YAMB is just a GUI for MP4Box, so either should do the same thing.

Looks like YAMB/MP4Box doesn't like PCM audio. Can you at least use it to extract the video and remux as MP4? That way you know all you need to do is extract the audio, maybe convert it to mp3/aac/whatever, and you'll be good to go.

Is ffmpeg able to extract the audio?

I am hoping for a single step process, the camera will get a lot of use and easier is better.

YAMB processed the video no problem. I'm pretty sure ffmpeg will do what I want with audio and video, it is just a case of getting the right libraries and syntax.

Rather than spend time figuring it out I thought I would check to see if someone had solved it already given the popularity of these devices I thought it was worth a crack.

Even if someone has experience with ffmpeg that could point me in the right direction.

I found this example online but couldn't get it to work:

ffmpeg -i MVI_0028.MOV -vcodec copy -acodec libfaac -ab 320k MVI_0028.mp4

Fair enough. So what happens when you try that? It doesn't work at all? I haven't had as much success with ffmpeg as I have with mp4box. I'd take that resultant mp4 and try to remux with YAMB. If that doesn't work, try just the video stream and then you'll know if it's just the audio causing issues.

I spent forever trying to get it to work (long story) and when it finally did the PS3 showed it as unsupported format.

At that point I turned to geekzone...

You are right... I could use one method to extract video, another method to encode audio and then another step to remux... just hoping for a one step as mentioned... surely someone is doing this already...

The annoying thing is that the PS3 supports both L-PCM and AVC that the EOS uses. But somehow not in the MOV container format. Apple vs. Sony perhaps? Wink

I have just tried running one of my EOS video files through SUPER and had pretty good success.
Download SUPER here

It won't seem to do a direct stream copy for the audio, but it seems to copy/remux the video into a nice shiny new PS3 compatible MP4 file all right. I just transcoded the audio into AAC LC.

Give that SUPER a whirl. It's not the most user friendly interface, but it does the job. The website is also terrible, hence why I have given you the direct download link.
It also has batching facility so you should be able to convert your files en mass.

I just tested the transcoded file on my PS3 and it plays fine. The AVC stream is reporting between 40-50Mbps!!! Holy Crud!!

I have a canon eos 550d which does HD movies and use Windows Movie maker (windows live essentails beta download) This converts them to a wmv file which could be a suggestion (never used PS3) but it allows playback on low specs computers

Thanks for the suggestion, I really want to play them on the PS3 for reasons I won't go into (unless you want to know) if at all possible I would like to play them without converting to another codec as this maintains quality and is also a very fast process.

SUPER was exactly what I was looking for and worked fine... thanks.
