i once had sonys best handycam ever made.
it cost the earth, and it was fabulous.
even had a gps function in it :0 !

sadly i sold it, because i dont use a camera that often.
so now its time to buy my downgrade.!

im after something like the FLIP MINO or JVC's gc-fm1

i have read a few reviews , and thought, i have no idea.
for the flip mino it would have to be the 3rd gen. (just to add)

i have heard that the jvc comes with poor software, but im sure i can upload a simple video myself and edit it with pinnacle or something.

so guys, whats your opinion? what one should i buy, or not buy? and why?
ive got about a week to decide... :S

thanks in advance for all your help

(bolded and underlined incase someone gets sick of reading)

cheers

I have tried a couple of the flips and a similar cheapie, and all of them had that filmed on a mobile phone look to them, jellyvision if the camera was subjected to movement and strange banding when videoing under some lighting.

was that look the same when played back through your pc?
i understand they aren't the best quality :S , but the size and price is quite ideal.

Yes, thats what I was playing them on. rolling shutter makes most cheap cameras unusable for anything involving motion, seems worse in lower light too.

i have seen a movie on ben geeks website that has him demonstrating rolling shutter.
however, in his movie, he is moving the camera and the fence rolls all over the place (lol)
does it also happen when the camera is still, and an object in moving past it? lets say, a skateboard?

Yes, it does, anything moving will look diagonal. If you grab a frame from it, cars will all look mangled.

Can see it when watching it too. Seems to be more noticible when viewed on a large screen, watching it on a small CRT its barely noticible, 50" LCD and clear as day.

If you get something with rolling shutter and an optical zoom, thats even worse when things all go strange while zooming.

oh that sucks...
so none of the mini camera's out these days are safe from rolling shutter?
i would be viewing it on a 24 inch lcd , not rich enough for a 50 inch tv :D
