Hi

Trying to decide what to do.

I have a canon MP530 multi function, it has a standalone fax (no pc required), CD/DVD printing, ADF for scanning etc.

It does it's job. But upon moving to W2k8 Server I've had real issues getting it running there are no official W2k8 drivers (there are W7 x64 ones though) and I can get the printer function going, but not the scanner.

So I'm left with a couple of options.
Get some USB print server device for the printing - but I dont know of any that will do the scan to email.

Or find a printer that will do the networking built in (including the network scanning - I prefer scan to email over network scanning - but I'll take what I can get).

The ADF is important - duplexing will be nice but not essential.
Duplex printing again nice but not important.
I could probably drop the faxing and use a laptop as and when faxing is needed.
The CD/DVD Printing is also a nice to have.

Any recommendations? Either solutions, or printer models.

Edit: Print volumes are pretty low, likely to be maybe 5 pages a week - if that.

You should look for a device that has built in scan to FTP/email/SMB rather than needing software on a server to do it for you. I have a spare OKI laser that definitely does scan to email if you want it? We have a flash new Konica Bizhub so no need for it anymore and I have spare toner :)

I just replaced my Canon MP960 (CD printing failed) with an Epson Artisan 725, with a RIHAC continuous ink system (cost about $180 I think). Paper handling isn't as good as the Canon, but it does good prints, and with the CIS print costs drop 95%. It has network functions, but I haven't used them. It's worth checking out.

Ahh yes did look good. But that lack of ADF got me...

By ADF do you mean something that will feed pages in to be copied? Not many home/small business inkjet printers have that do they?

Consumer recommends:
- HP LaserJet Pro M1212nf
- HP OfficeJet 8500

I would stay away from HP TBH, had many HP devices and they are more trouble than they are worth. I've had multiple broken paper feeders, drivers that don't work on newer operating systems, messed up colour etc.

You could have a look at Brother with something like the 9120-CN

Ha ha funny, I work for HP - but came across from EDS and no I use a canon now as I found HP ink too expensive. Also HP mulitfunctions generally dont have ADF or fax capability.

The brothers did seem to be the most feature rich. I guess being more business oriented they didn't seem to have the CD/DVD printing... But I guess I can get over that.

I own a Brother 9120-CN colour laser and it is very good.

Toner is cheap, and because its a laser it lasts a long time compared with ink jet (because of their constant cleaning cycles).

Scanning is easy too, as I just press the scan to computer button, select computer and presto.

Although I do complement my 9120-CN with a brother mono hl-2140, because per page, the mono laser is unbeatable on price. I think I can get a toner for around $60 that does up to 2500 pages.
