This phone - which includes 2 x 5MP cameras and a 3D-capable 4" screen - will be available soon. I see a mock-up today at Westfield Albany. Hopefully the real thing will follow on shortly.

Taking 3D photos with a phone will be awesome.

Sounds a bit gimmicky, but I am curious all the same.

What would you use to view your 3d photos I wonder?  Do you need a 3D TV?

I don't have a 3D TV (though I'd like to buy one at some point).

I have a "Fujifilm Finepix Real 3D W3" camera. It does both 2D and 3D photos at the same time, so you have both. The spec is reasonable. It's 10mp in 2D and 7.2mp in 3D and makes 3D or 2D video at 720p HD.

For viewing, the camera comes with software that does a pretty good job in red / cyan anaglyph as well as a TV-compatible format I can't use.

I got some red / cyan glasses with good, solid plastic frames via TradeMe for $6 / pair. I bought 5.

I tend to prefer the red / cyan anaglyph because then I can view the images and videos fullscreen on my 27" monitor...and they look awesome.

For sharing, there are several reasonably good sites and they tend to support at least the most popular viewing methods (red / cyan anaglyph with glasses or side-by-side "cross eye" stereo).

start3d.com (stills only)
3dporch.com (stills only)

3df33d.tv - still (fullscreen, if you like) and video (up to 1080p), supports about a dozen 3D formats for viewing *and* allows you to manually adjust the parallax of any image or video at time of viewing for best 3D effect. This site is THE BEST...so far. :-)

Note that the default viewing mode for 3df33d.tv is regular old 2D and you have to actually select a 3D format to see anything else. So if you wan't, you just put your 3D pics up there and point people at them..and if they don't want to see them in 3D, they don't have to.

YouTube also support 3D video very well, but they don't so far allow the user to adjust the parallax, so what you see in 3D properly can be a bit of a lottery.

To me, 3D isn't a gimmick. The depth it adds to every photo of any kind is, to me, like the difference between black & white and colour.

Must have.

Great explanation, thank you (though I must confess turning to Wikipedia for an explanation of anaglyph).  To the point that I am now going to go and check out the Finepix camera.

If you want to look at some content, I've posted a lot of stuff on 3DF33D.TV....as I have been uploading from red / cyan anaglyphs to Picasa here.

3DF33D.TV doesn't support folders, so if you upload anything try to use a set of tags that will help you organise your images.

I tend to use date / location / subject tags with my initials so they don't get confused with other users using the same words / dates.

My userid there is also "linuxluver", so.....

LL20110820, LL201108, LL2011, Auckland, New Zealand, cool cars, linuxluver, fujifilm finepix

This way I (or anyone) can access my photos by date/day, date/month, date/year as well as my pics being lumped into a 'global' (words probably used by others, too) city, country, subject, owner and method used to take the photo.

Thanks, I'll have a look at home tonight.  Confirming then, I'll need to put on a pair of red/cyan glasses, just like those from the cinema, to view these properly on the 3DF33D.TV  site.  Correct?

Almost.

Two things you need to know:

1. The site requires WebGL support. if your browser hasn't got it, it usually detects that and tells you how to get it.

2. The site supports lots of different 3D viewing modes. I use mainly stereo cross-eyed (no glasses needed, but you have to be able to cross your eyes to see stereo) or I use red / cyan anaglyph which is the "red / blue" glasses.....but if you have any 3D glasses from the movies you may want to see if they work with any of the dozen or so other options. :-)

When you first click on "Select 3D mode" you get the pic and a list of 8 options (I think) on the right ride. But also, under the pic you'll see "Other Options"....and if you click on that you get 10 more 3D viewing options. I haven't tried them with the cinema glasses...I probably should. One of them might actually work! :-)

Impressive results, welldone. I looked at the Picasa site with red/blue 3D-glasses.

Unfortunately I don't think I can justify spending 6-700 bucks on another camera at the moment.
