Curious as to what others are doing to control internet access. Currently my kids are young and innocent enough that they'd tell us about anything that they unwittingly stumble across, but times will change.

Our kids primary devices are Chromebooks (they've also got a very old iPhone each which basically has everything turned off except YouTube music so I'm not too worried about those).

I've just set up a WLAN / VLAN for the kids devices so I can control the time their wifi network is off and on (admittedly, that took quite a bit of help from a particularly helpful member on the forums). I've also set up this VLAN with cleanbrowsing.org's DNS servers (and intercepted port 53. Cheers for hardwiring that in to some devices google), so that should deal with the adult stuff. I guess I'm perhaps more worried about inappropriate chatting / social media / cyberbullying though. Again, not a problem yet but just thinking longer term.

Google seems to be shifting towards Family Link and away from supervised users, but that only seems to apply to Chrome?

What are others doing?

Google Family Link currently only works on Android. not Chrome OS.

Something to have in mind if you give your kid a smarpthone with mobile data... I was puzzled on how my daughter managed to go through 2GB a month for the last two months (since she got the smartphone) when most of her usage is at home... Well, doh! I have a rule in the router for her devices to not be allowed access to the Internet at night. Obviously this works for the tablet and Chromebook - but while she can't access the phone at night (Family Link rules lock the phone) all apps continue to work in the background, slowly sucking data from mobile, since the WiFi has no Internet access at night.

Fixed now... Devices still locked, but no more Internet restriction at home - otherwise mobile data will suffer.

Do we honestly think young people are so stupid that they cant find many many ways to get around this proposed ban ?

- go to a friends house & use their internet/wifi
- use one of the many free wifi hotspots
- hotspot onto a friends mobile internet
- buy a $20 smart phone from The Warehouse & use that on one of the many free hotspots

'Ban it' is just pretending the problem goes away .
Have we learn nothing from history :-)

A ban moves it  goes underground out of your control and supervision .
