I wonder if its a feature that will get switched on later? If so a better error message might be "this feature is not yet available in your area".

I had that issue when I was on the VPN with Places but after about half a dozen check-ins the option to add became available to me. Haven't looked at Places since it's been geo-unlocked here so not sure if adding is available to me yet.

Facebook places is now also working for the facebook windows phone 7 app.

I just randomly checked my Android Facebook app and I can now check-in if I want - didn't require any updates.

But it's not available on the Blackberry still.
