Whatever provider you use, make sure you can actually generate a UDAI - We all remember Jethost right? One of my mates had massive issues with trying to get a UDAI to transfer out since most of their services were b0rked + they also escaped providing phone support.

Hosting Direct "resell" from another Domain Provider who just recently was under attack by a group of Hackers, or Script Kiddies - If they go down for any reason and you want to get out, there's the UDAI issues.

Going with a actual "Domain Provider" ensures you are free to change at any time, plus your domain is less likely to get "lost" like quite a few supplied by Jethost who were also a "Domain Reseller" and not a real Domain Host. Going with a Domain Reseller like Hosting Direct is just asking for trouble in the future.

I have no issue with paying that bit extra to have my Domain Hosted by somebody that actually knows what they are doing, who can actually supply support I trust. Like anything, you get what you pay for.

UDAI? What's that?

Also, I hadn't considered that I'd need to "get out" at any time. Get out of what? I assumed that registering the domain name was simply paying for the rights to use that specific address. I know that registering is usually on an annual basis, but I figured you could register it with whoever you wanted, provided they were a Domain Registrar?

The UDAI number is what you need to transfer a domain if you want to move because your having issues and don't have a UDAI number your stuck. Very important, Godaddy and 1st domains both will provide it for you

Most will provide you with your own domain control panel, where you can automatically generate it yourself, and you don't need to rely on them sending it to you.

That is why you really want to keep your domain registration seperate from any hosting, so that if you have an issue with the host, you can move it without their involvement.

UDAI is the password type thing needed to move the domain name somewhere else, without it, then it would be like .coms etc which have had many problems with fraudulent transfers happening in the past.

Both ways have their problems, but there is always the hassle of proving that you are authorized to make changes to virtual products like domain names.

We've registered the domain, and have managed to get Blogger to recognise it. So now www.gnomadiclibrarian.com points to the blog. We followed Blogger's instructions for this, and it was pretty simple. But it also mentioned instructions to redirect the naked domain (i.e. gnomadiclibrarian.com) - something about A-records. When I put in the naked domain (gnomadiclibrarian.com) and the Google IP addresses which Blogger supplied into the DNS Manager on GoDaddy, it doesn't seem to save, and gnomadiclibrarian.com goes to a GoDaddy holding page.

Anyone have any ideas on what I need to do? I'm pleased that www.gnomadiclibrarian.com works, but I'd like to make sure that it will still work if people don't put in the www.

worked for me, you probably just have the old A record cached and it needs to expire from your computers dns cache or else your ISP's dns server.

when you say the old A record cached, I did notice there was an existing record - 68.178.232.100. Do I need to delete this first? Also, when I put in the naked domain, and then save the zone file, the domain name disappears and replaces it with an "@" Is that normal?

Yes, you have to replace it, otherwise it is pointing to that other server, not yours.

Really wouldn't use Hosting Direct. I have 20 domains with them which i bought before i knew their customer service was lacking.

Anyway wanted to changed the DNS servers over 2 weeks ago and their site was down, lodged a support ticket and 1 week later had heard nothing.

Called them up and they said they would change it for me. A week after that and it still hadn't been changed i was sick of it so went to request UDAI - that part of their site was broken as well.

Called them up and they said their whole system was down and they couldn't supply it.

I am calling on monday and if they can;t supply it them i am lodging a formal complaint.

Basically their customer support is a joke, but even worse than poor service they act as if they don't even want to help or have you as a customer.

Sounds like a pretty bad experience.
I registered two more domain names for a family member through HD last week, all was fine, no issues.
I was emailed the UDAI automatically, had no other issues.
I have emailed their customer support once before, many months ago, and the support I received was fine, hopefully your bad experience was an exception!

Okay, thanks. I deleted the existing IP address, and then added the four different IP addresses supplied by Google. I left it an hour, as they suggested, but now it just shows a generic 404 error. In the DNS manager on GoDaddy, the four IP addresses I entered in are showing, but in the Host column it just shows an "@" rather than gnomadiclibrarian.com as I entered it. Any ideas?

You could contact the registrar for support, as they would have direct control and can make sure they are right.

It was because they use distrubuteIT as their registar and everything turned to mud after they got hacked.

I do know a number of people who were in the same situation as me and left high and dry for around a month without any contact.

The few times i had used support before this it was good.

You only need to set up a web redirect to point your domain to the blogger site.

Where it says @ it normally means your domain name without any www or similar in front of it.

I see you have several @ which indicates that the domain will point to one of those ips which happen to be google name servers.

Strangely you have the www subdomain pointed to a google server also, are you trying to use googkes servers to accomplish the web redirect? Your domain registrar will likely have an easier way of accomplishing this.
