A couple of weeks ago I received a cool looking invite in the letterbox to join Neighbourly, a new social networking site designed around connecting neighbors instead of friends, by validating your address etc. I think I had actually come across it almost a year ago and perhaps registered my interest then.

I'm surprised no-one else here has posted about it yet, it is (mostly) a pretty slick website and I think an important step to try and foster a bit of community in our high fenced cities.

I've already been impressed about the number of postings in my neighbourhood, someone asked and got a free Tivo remote, another person was swapping a garden shed. I saw another thread today about an alternative to Trademe; I think there are a lot of times when we just want to get rid of something and don't care too much about getting money for it. Could be a great way to flog off your unwanted bits of technology. I also saw a colleague from IITP lives just a street over from me.

Apparently founded by Shane & Casey the guys behind GrabOne and Finda.co.nz.
Check it out and see what you think - if you don't mind, please use my invite link below so I can get a free t-shirt :)

My invite link (I've put it on bit.ly so I can delete it after a few days) - it isn't going to make us neighbors or anything unless we live in the same postcode-

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Thanks - yeah that's why I used bit.ly thought I could try and obscure that slightly and take down after a few days.

EDIT: I'm guessing you're probably meant to use that link for people in your neighbourhood for real, maybe it doesn't do anything if they are in another neighbourhood. Worth a try :P

looks pretty 'meh' to me.

Much like facebook, if something is free, then you aren't the customer, you are the product.   So care should be taken with what information you give them.

Interestingly, they also offer FBook signin... Maybe a way for FB to get into your address even deeper ? (!)

Else HOW are we the 'product' here I wonder?

Like with any online service you need to be careful about the info you share. I think it will be less personal than what people share elsewhere. You know your posts are available to the whole neighbourhood so you write appropriately. Yes, they could target ads much more geographically specific than Facebook, but so could heaps of people.
Servers are hosted at Rackspace in Sydney I see which is a nice touch rather than on some cheap host in the states.

At the moment I think it is a great idea, who knows long term how it will go but definitely one of the more unique social networks I have come across. (We've been doing online social networks based around interests/topics and friends for ages, not so much around locations).

I know the saying about free online services make us the users the product, while I'm sure it could be argued all sorts of ways, really the product is a conduit to deliver targeted and effective advertising, and probably a "crime" fighting tool (in the case of Facebook). I'm not sure what other business model could work at the moment, these things cost a lot of money to run.

I signed up for it.

Used primarily as a pre warning system for noise from my house.

I just got an email about this site from the neighbourhood watch group that I'm signed up to.

I might take a look at it, even though I don't normally have anything to do with social media sites.
