I know Google has the 'always on' listening for "Ok Google" but Facebook constantly listening in for keywords for targetted advertising seems a little far fetched?

Or *tin foil hat* is it really possible?

If the technology to do that isn't here already, it will be, very soon.

If you want a phone that doesn't spy on you I'd suggest getting a GSM Nokia candybar with no data. I wouldn't trust anything else not to! smile

The answer according to Facebook is yes, but not always:

Facebook: Does Facebook record conversations when it identifies the things I'm listening to or watching?

No, we don't record your conversations. If you choose to turn on this feature, we'll only use your microphone to identify the things you're listening to or watching based on the music and TV matches we're able to identify. If this feature is turned on, it's only active when you're writing a status update.

Note: This optional feature is only available in the US right now.

The article alleges information gained is being used for targeted advertising. That would not be surprising at all. Facebook has a long history of using all data they get their hands on and this is just data.

Android Marshmallow / 6x gives the ability to deny app permissions for mic etc.

And just in case you think advertising isn't worth it to Facebook: http://www.wsj.com/articles/facebook-revenue-soars-on-ad-growth-1461787856

$5.2bn last quarter - Jan-Mar 16. QUARTER. from clickable annoying ads.

That place is a monster.

Given that my most of my conversations consist of: "I'm on the ferry, do you want anything from the shops?", Why do I get so many mature dating ads?

Interests: HTPC, Web App authoring.

Not sure how Facebook would manage that to be honest since these are the permissions out of the box on Android 6.0.1:
