is there any way of getting the facebook app on a device without giving it unfettered access to your contacts, emails etc?

I want to start putting up FB posts for a community organisation but after signing up for face book and seeing how much they knew about me ( 25 pages of who I might know including stuff going back to my early school years) despite me not having an FB account - i want to ensure I don't do that to someone else.

The info they have on me was gleaned mostly from the apps on phones belonging to people who dont care about privacy ( or think they haven't given FB info by allowing them access to their contacts etc).

Also as a community / social worker - for me to put FB on my work phone and give access would breach so many privacy laws it is not funny. however the app is a good way to take quick photos, and do quick posts - keeping people up to date and building community - just not at the expense of privacy.

I'm considering getting a virgin device nad using it strictly for FB - but who needs to carry a third phone now days? (personal , work and FB phone)

If you're using iOS, just don't give Facebook access to anything – I have location, camera, microphone, contacts, and calendar access, all turned off.

Sure, the Facebook App bugs me all the time to "Sync your contacts" but I just deny it each time.

android unfortunately - also no option to say no when installing. It demands access as part of the install.

Isn't that alittle like bolting the door after the horse has gone? The app demands the access on set up anad I would suspect it has reviewed and sent on your contacts as one of its first actions on install.

Depends on whether you think it's the first thing it does on install.

?Install, 5 seconds later turn off Wi-Fi and data.
Limit the permissions

Then open the app for first time.

Alternatively.(PC) Install virtual software, install Linux, only access fb from a guest login.

Alternatively 2. Shrug shoulders and say my privacy is most important and give up on the group that expects you to use facebook.

Why not just use the web browser for access? I've never used the FB app on my phone.

Yup, I just use the mobile version of their website on my phone. Lets me post stuff and isn't as intrusive or hogging of phone resources.

^ I do as well.  I wish there was a way to permanently turn off the bar that comes up the top telling you to install the app

Trying to get a bit of community running for the group - and the app lets you take a photo, quick message and upload it. The html version sucks - it is so complex and a quickie post is not really an option.  Spent 15 minutes trying to figure out how to friend a person who commented on a post then gave up. also tried messaging a reply to the person but cant find them in the to fieldif you want to share na event. Typed their name in - doesnt show up. it is not intuitive.

Will try it out - part of the problem is there are three groups on the site ( community house, mens shed and a commuity garden) - which really deserve seperate attention as they do very different things and have different groups of people. Blog site much easier and emailing in a post or a quick upload is sooooo easy.
