Chch teen ordered to delete Facebook account after girl's death

Perhaps a sad commentary on the rise of social media and the potential harm it can cause.

40 hours community service in real terms equivalent to an $800 fine ...

I'm not a parent, facebook account holder or a smartphone user. Teens these days have instant access to all sorts of communications apps that are completely over my head. Who knows how savvy this girl's parents are when it comes to all this modern crap?

If parents buy kid a gun and kid kills, "oh i am not gun savvy!"

If parents buy access to facebook and kid kills, "oh i am not technologically savvy!"

But my main point is that kids are not taught to respect and care for each other, rather, be self entitled and selfish and self centered, which leads to a lot of things including bullying.

I see it as the digital age has made more people morons. And the outcome is exactly your last description.

See it at skate parks (I hang with older women shooting street roller skating) where teens and tweens are more boisterous and not afraid to throw their weight around. Abuse and or shove people like it was a school field. The only thing I can come up with is the anonymity of social media. It use to happen in online gaming. It's now even more convenient to do it on a mobile phone hidden miles appart behind a small screen.

There was a group of 3 with a phone 'listening' into a semi private conversation where the primary party was simply txting abuse and putting down the other party and reading them to the others. They were reminded of social outcomes.

Kid age activities are vastly different to this bent neck computer in my hand thats affordable age. We use to go out on bikes in groups of 3+ and adventure. Or hit up different parks. Go to an empty subdivision and build forts from fauna and so on.

Now, you band together with your 5 best mates and sit around a desk or mall tabke with mobiles in hand showing each other your screen while judging people you know walking past.

^^^ In that case, society could pretty much be f***ed by the time this new generation is out there working and voting. Assuming they're even capable of doing either of those activities. yell

I got bullied a lot at school. My first year of secondary school was 1984, way before any of this new-fangled stuff was even thought of. Kids definitely have it way worse with bullying now.

Facebook was just a tool. How deleting her profile will fix the problem? Wow, 40 hours of community service. Serious? What a joke! The real issue is much deeper. The teen parents who should've been watching the girl's online activities. The school supposed to be a place where the students feel safe, not the everyday victms of bullies. The other students who should've called the bully out and defend the victim. And of course, the offender itself. Her actions seem to be a symptom of what is wrong in our society.

Exactly. Why are people allowed to have kids when they actually don't want to care for them. An ethical worms-can.
