Hello,

This is my first time on this sight. My cousin "caligirl" suggested I post on here to get some advice/help.

A couple of weeks ago I did a very stupid thing by sharing a link on whatsapp that was copied from a chat with a personal message attached. I panicked and ended up deleting full chat histories. One of those chat histories included one with my Ex-boyfriend who has wronged me in every way imaginable (my son as well) and I was keeping our chat history as evidence for officials to retrieve belongings and finances as well as his proof of unsavory behavior. (I say this in a light way as I am not wanting to get too deep into the seriousness of his actions). Once I realised what I had done, I went online and have tried to recover them on my own (nothing has been backed up).

Firstly I downloaded and tried this program: (coz I am new here I cannot post links. Thats why they are cut short)

It said I needed to root my phone to get further messages as it did'nt recover the whatsapp ones. So then I tried these tips I found on Youtube...

and then

Nothing has worked so far.

Is there someone out there that would be able to give me some advice or help me get these chats back at all?

Many thanks,

Inki.

If you haven't backed it up at all, it's most likely lost.

What kind of phone do you have?

If it is apple and you have ever connected it to iTunes you may have a full system backup on the computer that has iTunes.

Check if you have save to cloud enabled in Whatsapp too.

Otherwise, it could be possible to use a program like anytrans to search through the Whatsapp information on your phone. Small chance it is there, but , might be encrypted.

Finally, contact the makers of Whatsapp, they can possibly assist you.

.. and I was keeping our chat history as evidence for officials to retrieve belongings and finances as well as his proof of unsavory behavior. ...

This kind of stuff you want to keep in offline / read only storage. It should not be on a device you use everyday for exactly this reason.

From WhatsApp security page: ... That's why WhatsApp doesn't store your messages on our servers once we deliver them, ...

Seems like it will be pretty much impossible using the app itself or any official / sanctioned method by the developers.

  • Depending on how important this is / how much you are willing to pay, there might be some data recovery services that could analyse your phone & stitch the data back together?
  • If you use Google services on an Android phone, you could try to download & search through your data from https://takeout.google.com. The Profile, My Activity, Drive & Android Device Configuration Service might be good starting points.

I feel your pain. If you do manage to recover some of the missing data, please make sure to back it up.

My Whatsapp stores the messages on Google drive. When I restore Whatsapp on a new phone it restores the chat histories. You can't access them directly on Google Drive, but poke around in Whatsapp under settings / chats / chat history or chat backup.

Yeah, from memory if you reinstall whatsapp you get one chance to download the chat history - if you decline at this point to download it, you may have to reinstall to get prompted again. No idea if it deletes the history if you decline (iOS for me)

Thank you all for your reply.

my phone is a Samsung Galaxy Note S7.

I have emailed Whatsapp and they have said that they cannot help. I am worried that by using the program that I did initially, it may have made it more complicated than it could have been.

I had never granted it to do the back up to google and when I did try to reload whatsapp I did decline for it to back up from google. However I think that if it did back up from google it would back it up from after I deleted the messages?

None the less, I will try all of the suggestions above. If possible I would like to do it without having to pay the big dollars for someone to get the messages. So will see how I go with the advice received.

Many thanks again and I will let everyone know how it turns out.

Wish me luck.
