https://themarkup.org/google-the-giant/2021/04/09/google-blocks-advertisers-from-targeting-black-lives-matter-youtube-videos

Google blocks advertisers from using dozens of social and racial justice terms, including Black Lives Matter, to find YouTube videos and channels upon which to advertise.

At the same time, Google offered advertisers hundreds of millions of choices for YouTube videos and channels related to White supremacist and other hate terms...

Google spokesperson Christopher Lawton declined to answer any questions for this story but took no issue with our investigation or findings. After reviewing them, the company did not lift its ban on the social and racial justice terms we shared, but it did block the hate terms that we had pointed out were in contradiction with them, including “White lives matter” and “White power.”

The company also responded by blocking even more of the 62 social and racial justice terms on our list. When we began our investigation, Google Ads only blocked a third of them for searches. Now it blocks more than 80 percent, adding dozens of terms to its blocklist, including “Black in Tech,” “Black excellence,” and “antiracism.”

Just a quick footnote that Youtube Ads' Comms Manager seems to be black, liberal, and quite active on Twitter promoting anti-racism - movements and causes.

He "declined to answer any questions".  How very strange.

And yet there are as many howls from the ‘right’ about shadow bans, censorship and hypercritical applications of terms of service. In Google’s case, possibly trying to make sure the crocodile eats them last.

I would suggest Google gave up on the “Don’t be evil” a long time ago. Watching “The Social Dilemma” on Netflix was a big eye opener.

Technically the truth - they dropped "don't be evil" in 2015, now "do the right thing".

Yes some from the "right" are crying, but it's not the same thing when bans are for promoting violence and hatred/bigotry which isn't "right and left" but "right and wrong" and made clear in T&C what the rules are.  If you're "shadow banned" (ie from Reddit) and don't realise it, then crying about discrimination against the terminally stupid probably won't gain much traction.

What Youtube seem to have been doing is covert and deceptive, the public face is saying they're highly supportive of human rights movements etc, but in the "back room" they're monetising the other side and not allowing monetisation of the side they claim to support.

And that is evil.

It's entirely possible this situation is more complex that it appears. Personally I'd hold off judgement on this until some more information.

Sure - but the guy who should be the channel for more information - because it's his job - doesn't want to answer questions.
