Disgusting, its all to see who can become the first Trillionaire for their "Guinness book of records moment" , and they do not care who they hurt.

A surprising number of people still use Meta's products, so the general public don't really seem to care.

Including law enforcement and governments apparently.

Its the government "protection" that gets me.

Fines for multinational need to be a percentage of turnover (Not profits because they have creating accounting) and/or a percentage of shares from the top 100 shareholders

Many B2C (business to consumer) companies like retailers are 'forced' to use Meta Business Suite as a part of their social media marketing efforts as this is where the audiences are.

The audiences wouldn't be there if the general public stopped using foreign owned online platforms with dubious business practices and no customer support function.

While I agree, I suspect that we are more conscious about this than most.  The average Facebook or Instagram or WhatsApp user is simply unaware or blissfully ignorant of issues behind the brands.  I don't have any suggestions at this stage as to how we educate those everyday average users.

Start at school.

Teach the internet and how all the scams work.

Teach them about how anything they do online is forever.

Teach them that "Likes" etc on social media does NOT mean they are your friend, and like farming is a waste of time .

freitasm: Link to the original article mentioned in the blog post: Meta is earning a fortune on a deluge of fraudulent ads, documents show | Reuters

The article indicates that Meta does not respond to police reports of hacked pages being used to scam contacts even when those reports are easily verifiable. I suspect the reported lack of action from Meta if correct violates telecommunication laws in most countries. I'm surprised very little action has occurred.

Money buys protection, ie he has more money to tie the courts ups in knots than the justice department has to fund the prosecution, so they dont bother.

„God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.“

😉

Every time I meet new people and they want to send me something via Facebook or WhatsApp, I have to disappoint them bitterly – without exception. 😁 - ‘Hardly anyone uses Signal (you backward bird! 🤣).’ Unfortunately, from an IT perspective, I must continue to regard them as unsafe and as potential threats to my value system – even though they have no malicious intentions at this moment – which is terrible from a social and human perspective.

OT: At the moment, however, Palantir for the police is a big issue here in Germany. The emotional terms „safety“ and „security“ kill all rational arguments. There is still a data transfer agreement in place that also includes data from German servers being transferred to the US government on request.

There is nothing more dangerous than hysterical women (and men) who uncritically throw their personal rights overboard for politicians' promises of supposed (!) ‘more protection for their children at risk of abuse’. As we hear afterwards, quite a few of them voted for Trump out of a need for „protection“, even though they don't like him at all, and now he is thanking them by taking away their jobs. Actually ICE is actively searching for immigrants in the US with the help of Palantir.

Tinkerisk mumbling again: But why am I ranting on about this again? Most people don't understand the real context anyway (or don't want to deal with it until it's too late and the facts have already been established). I'm going to go to a chocolate shop now and buy 1kg of best chocolate and eat it all at once, like this! 🤣

Not particular to Meta, it's the same for all ad-selling marketplaces like Google or Twitter. Sad that our government doesn't do anything to stop it as it preys on the people most vulnerable. Frequently the ads use AI to impersonate the PM or well-known celebrities to promote the scams.

"In Britain, a regulator last year said it found that Meta’s products were involved in 54% of all payments-related scam losses in 2023, more than double all other social platforms combined"

There is something unique about Facebook. It is a more personal vector than other products.

The article also points to encouraging signs Meta may be starting to catch more of those issues. The statistics are provided by Meta so who knows. I'm guessing people will always be unhappy until Meta are able to assess and react appropriately to credible reports of social scamming rapidly and accurately.
