Hi all,
I'm hoping some geeks might be able to help identify the cause of an annoying problem I am having with Facebook.  The problem is that I don't receive basic notifications when somebody comments on my posts.

facebook example

This picture is an example.  As you can see, about an hour ago somebody (Jade) commented on the link I posted.  I was surprised to see it, because I received no notification of it, as shown in the top part of the photo.

Even when going to the separate notifications page, there is no record of the comment:

Facebook 2

This has been going on for a month or so now - I used to receive notifications without problem -  and it's not every comment notification but it is most of them.  Oddly enough,  "like" notifications always come through.

Facebook has a notifications settings page, but here you can only enable or disable email and SMS notifications.  I assume that the normal notifications (that I'm not getting) cannot be disabled?  Or am I missing something?  Are there other settings I may have changed by accident?

I am using Firefox 4 and have tried clearing my cookies.  I might try using IE for a couple of days and see if it still causes the problem.

I have also tried to contact facebook, but they don't reply to people, you just get a "thanks for reporting this issue" automated email.

Another thought is that my ISP uses an akamai server to cache facebook... this wouldn't be the cause of the problem, would it?  Coincidentally,  I changed to this new ISP (snap) about the same time.

Any other ideas?  This is frustrating the hell out of me.

Thanks :D

It will most likely a problem with their website. I dislike those types of services, because there is no one to really contact when you have a problem. Although having said that when I reported a problem to linkedin, they did reply and fix it.

The solution is, to delete your Facebook (that's what I did)

You cant delete your account. Can only place it on hold...

I tried shutting mine down and it said it was done, so I thought Id log back in to make sure it was done - nothing had changed...then I read the small print - they only put the account on hold and that is released soon as you log back in again. Theyve got me forever.... nooooo! :-p

Not true.  You only deactivated your account.  You can delete your account by going here.

I don't use it myself either personally, as they keep changing the privacy settings. However I do need to use it for business :(

Don't you hate that?  Anytime these days people mention Facebook there's a flood of doofuses who can't wait to breathlessly tell you how they don't use it, they deleted their account etc.

Anyway, this seems to be a common problem.  One method suggested to try and fix involves enabling all emails settings in your account and then disabling them again.  Another suggests going offline in Facebook Chat.

But it looks to be one of those Facebook things that affects some accounts and not others.

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

Thank you very much for your reply, Muppet.  I tried enabling all email notifications, for all scenarios.  Frustratingly, the problem is still occurring as per the image here:

I've now switched to Chrome, in case it was Firefox causing the problems.
If anyone else has any possible ideas about the problem please let me know.

There probably isn't too much help people can provide, as it appears to be a facebook problem, and they are probably the only ones who can fix it. Yet you probably can't contact them to fix it. Due to it being a free service, I guess it is provided as is.

I would often not get stuff happen in the alert list, and needed to do a CTRL-F5 to get it all working again. happens more at home on slingshot then when at someone elses house on xnet. Same computer.

Best solution I found is to just have email notifications to my hotmail address and then live messenger would alert me to it and I could ctrl-f5 and see what it was.

Facebook make use of AJAX and caching... Sometimes an Xmlhttprequest did not send through the back channel data to the browser correctly. Guarantee way is hard refresh as suggested: CTRL-F5.

Oh I see you know Pete Marcroft.
