Google yesterday announced the Chromebook Pixel, a new Chrome OS-based notebook that Google is aiming directly at Apple's MacBook Air. More information can be found here.

Here are a few reasons why I think this laptop won't "take off"..

1. Price - WiFi USD$1299
LTE USD$1499
(WOW! How expensive!!)

2. Free 1TB of Google Drive space... for three years, Then you have to pay! Besides.. if you are on a tight budget, you can't afford to stream around 1tb of data per month!

3. Web apps.. You just can't replace the desktop apps as they are currently more advanced features than in the web apps..

4. Always-On Internet connection.

Those are my thoughts.. what about yours?

Edit: changed an error from "three months" to "three years" for Drive space..

It might work in the US, but in the technological whop whops like NZ that sort of thing isn't going to work very well. Perhaps when we have modern internet speeds and modern ISP and 3/4G Caps then it might work here.

In terms of hardware, it's a very sexy looking device. Should the bootloader be unlockable it would look very nice with Ubuntu sitting on it! Personally I would love to try out a Chromebook, but the price and cost of additional services (connection and storage) makes then unattractive right now.

Considering what you are getting for the price, I have no idea how they justify the price from a consumer point of view however.

It's 1TB access for 3 years, not 3 months as you have mentioned. After that it's $50/month for 1TB which is $600/year.

USD$1300 for a web browser with 32GB storage = lololololololololololol

The touch response looks rubbish in all the hands on videos I have seen. Battery life is rated at only 5 hours (that's officialy stated), real life would be less.

Good looking hardware but waaaay overpriced for the features it offers.

Do whatever you want to do man.

One website was putting up a bounty for the first person to install win8 on one, the assumption was that the hardware wise it was basically an intel ultrabook so it shouldn't pose too much of a problem

Even if it is a hit in the US it will fail miserably here as its cloud reliance will be a hard sell locally
