That is really cool - I have an Alienware 14 and do see a use for this but will be interested with what weight it can handle. Good luck on the campaign, it is nice to see something like this come out of NZ.

Thanks Michael, well my 12yr old has an old clunker of a 15in HP laptop that's quite heavy and it works great.  She plays Minecraft on it too so puts the stand through it's paces.

Nice one, guys!

I'm using a butt-ugly home made standing desk at my office and something like this would be a much more attractive solution.  In my case I need something to support multiple monitors.

Some suggestions to consider for version 2.

  • Could you cut the keyboard stand out of the base using an angled cut?  This would allow you when putting the Elevate aside to put the keyboard stand back in the base and lean it against a wall on a slight angle and the keyboard base won't 'fall out'.  Perhaps put a small finger hole in the keyboard stand to easily pull it out of the base.
  • The laptop stand and the keyboard stand...  if you put a small plastic lip on the back of these that sticks down when the Elevate is in use, when yo put the Elevate to one side you could 'hang' the two stands off the main slotted part when it is leaned against a wall.
  • The supporting rod...  Is it made of a springy steel so that it kinda clips into place instead of having to be fastened in some way?  If not done already, you could route a small channel into the back of the 'ladder' so the rod can be slipped into that space and it's 'springiness' holds it in place.
  • Transportation...  you could screw/glue 3 strips of ply on the back of the ladder that are cut on an angle that matches an angle on the base and the laptop shelf.  When transporting the Ellevate, slide the base (with the keyboard shelf in its hole) and the laptop stand between the strips of ply and they get held in place by friction.
Good luck!

Hi Michael, we just updated the Kickstarter page with a new load bearing image and details if you want to have a look (near page bottom).

Cheers

You need to expand your thinking outside the [Office] Box. Think about other places where computers are used.

The one in use in our office came in a flat box similar to flat screen tv, required no assembly, sits on top of the normal desk, has springs and quickly transforms by hand pressure from being normal desk level to being standing desk type. Makes it very flexible and saves space. You don't want to have standing desk and normal desk close to each other and move your hardware from one to another. Your design will not be winning to that one. However,

I can see usage for something like yours in my garage and other garages where people use diagnostic computers.
Laptop is the smallest thing to work with - all other electronic devices require my attention, need to be within the reach of hands, properly fastened, earthed etc.
For the application like mine - the rack type sliding support for the laptop (in standing poosition) would be space saving solution, BUT for the flexibility of positioning - something like yours could be usefull but with no extra deck for the keyboard - just laptop (i.e. has to be virtually in the air where I need it to monitor what's happening on the the screen) - something you see in the dentist's shop - hanging from the ceiling...

Your design inspires me to think how I can best orginise my space.
Good luck with the project

Sorry, I thought I posted that.  I have updated the Kickstarter with a new photo (near the bottom of the campaign).  It contains weight details too.  Cheers

It's been a wild ride, we're at 97% and 3 days to go.  I think we'll make it :)

apart from aesthetics how is this different from using some boxes and a bit of ply? Doesn't seem to move from standing to sitting at all or am I missing something?

Well, aesthetics drives a large part of the product industry.  Search newegg.com for "laptop stand" and it finds over 10,000 products.  Why choose one of those when it could done with a pizza box and a few sticks?  But the market exists.  I wouldn't classify us as form over function though, I think we found a good balance of aesthetics and functionality (opinions will vary).  Our solution offers a small space foot print and can be easily adjusted for ergonomics across a variety of body heights.  It could be used sit/stand style by dropping the keyboard shelf (or top shelf) to the last slot and placing the laptop on that, then upon standing pop the laptop on the top shelf and move the keyboard tray up a few slots.  I prefer to leave mine to one side of my desk.  I sit/stand at a 50-50 mix so just pop my laptop on the stand if I feel like standing for a while.  Other options (motorized sit stand desks or sophisticated ergotron arm systems) can be quite expensive as well.

As part of our health and wellness at work we implemented stand up desks. This increased the productivity of staff and they were more efficient at thinking on their feet (so to speak). To start with employee's thought it was quite funny that they would have to stand 8 hours of the day (most scoffed at the idea) - after trialing it for 3 months, most of those staff that turned their nose up to start with found that they had improved their postures, less back aches and weightloss results. They liked the concept.

If you walk in to banks and petrol stations you see they are all evolving into stand up offices.

I think your idea is a great one, and given the results I have experienced - it's awesome.

The difficult part is obviously the good ole "adapt to change" - most people are afraid of change. A few trial stations in offices and I think you have a winning concept!!!

Nice work! I am going to share this with a few work colleagues as we are currently discussing standup desk options.
