Yeah Digital Ocean Singapore region is well known for terrible routing to NZ/Aus - it has been an issue since it first launched and they have stated they have no plans to fix it.
Even though it is good cheap hosting it basically makes it unusable as a host for a NZ website.

Edit: Also their a quite a few hosts in Singapre/Aus that offer similar pricing but much better routing that DO.

Any recommendations for Singapore/Aus in your experience?

Rackspace looks like it could be a good option. Logging a ticket now on our Github issues. Any better suggestions welcome.

Rackspace is an option but not as competitive on pricing. I have had good experience with both of these:

Is this aiming at hiring full time people, long term contractors, people for small jobs, or all of the above?

I would go with AWS if you are comfortable running EC2 server couple it with an RDS for database - its a beautiful thing and very cost effective. Closest routing would be Sydney, although I have seen remarkable performance in NZ from their US based datacenters

EC2 / AWS isn't always super cheap, those per hour costs add up over time. Though US$90/month for an M4 instance isn't bad, a t2 large bustable instance may be enough and is a bit cheaper. Once it's working fine you could move to a reserved instance which does make it quite a bit cheaper.

We're using Cloud 66 for our devops (which we'll keep doing). May lean towards Amazon AWS.

It'll depend on what people want - we're pretty open minded at this stage. But definitely want to be lead by the community on Kandid.

I think we're going to need to get someone like Linus pretty soon though

That's usually true about RDS, it has many benefits. A t2.small instance is probably enough, and a smaller EC2 instance as well. The good thing is it's so easy to change if you get it wrong, so start small, test it, and upsize if required - or auto scale as required.

As I understand a lot of the second tier services are AWS resellers anyway with their own clients built on top. We actually started with Heroku, but Digital Ocean were promoting at Ruby Camp and I think it swayed me

I was wondering what the target for profiles/listings is? Currently its focussed on "core" ICT stuff. Just wondering if you had any plans to expand it to more support ICT roles in addition to devs and designers? I'm an ICT lawyer (sometimes at least).

Hey thanks mdf. Great feedback - I definitely need to refine the current strapline - "For IT folk who want the best pay and work flexibility". Kandid is intended for anyone involved with any part of the ICT process. Lawyers who specialise in ICT included. Feel free to register a profile with the applicable skills, I'd be happy to have you with us. We're trying to be agile, so you can have a hand in how the system shapes up. Especially when it comes to things like our Open Source Company Policy. The intention is that the direction of Kandid will be informed by the people who are in the system. And by nature of the way that search works based around skills, profiles will be separated organically. The only underlying factor is that the skills are applicable to the ICT industry be it dev, design, management, admin, law, etc.

What strapline speaks more to people involved in any area of ICT? Maybe - "Great pay and work flexibility for everyone that touches ICT" ???

We've made some changes to the reg process (https://www.kandid.nz/#/register). Some of the validations in the second step weren't firing properly. If any of you flailed at this step it's fixed now, and much more clear. Thanks for all the feedback so far, it's been really useful to us.
