Behodar:
Lurch: Hmm, no matter what option I choose for Region nothing comes up in the district/suburb drop down boxes.

It's working for me. Do you have JavaScript turned on?

Yes, have java script on, IE10, FF are all I use here. Both no luck.

No issues on other sites, forms work fine. Not sure what the issue is.

One big problem I think wheedle has, is that they don't appear to have any form of online community. The thing about trademe is that it has one of NZs biggest online communities, which makes trademe sticky. Whedel has no stickiness to it.  Even though they have done a fair amount of TV advertising, they still have less than 300 followers on twitter, and less than 1000 on facebook, I don't know how long the tv ads will run for.
Trademes customer service is also far better. Emailed Whedle on Sunday, and no reply Tuesday. Trademe usually replies within 12 hours I have found.

From Wheedle's Facebook page:

Hi NZ, in regards to some issues with the site please make sure you are running off an up to date web browser as this can instantly fix some problems that are working fine from our end.

- Activation key issues are working from this morning, if you have had trouble with these over the last few days please request a new activation key from the the link on the activation page which appears after you login and copy and paste this key from your email to the box on the website.

- Photo upload is still giving some users grief while trying to list items. Our team is working really hard to get this all working smoothly. We appreciate your patience with this. Please note, some users have reported photos working even though an error did appear. If you list your item they may work, if not these will able to be added to your listing once this issue has been fixed.

- We are working hard to get through our contact messages and are trying to get back to everyone as quickly as possible.

Please keep all your feedback coming, we want to make Wheedle a great platform for you all and we are listening to all your questions, comments and concerns. Thank you :)

Good to see that they are listening to, and acting upon complaints.  Total listings on the site are now more than 4500 which is not bad considering they have only been going for 3 days.

Agreed people need to get a grip and realize launching a site is hardly an easy thing, and a site of this complexity will have issues which need to be ironed out. If support is a little patchy for a few weeks, try and be a little understanding. People are far too quick to jump all over everything.

My auction on Wheedle has finished.

The Unsold list tells me "No bids". The details tells me there was indeed one bid.

I really want Wheedle to succeed. But no Special characters in password. Really? No passphrase. Really? It just says so much about the people behind the site design and security. Without a good technical team behind them can they succeed?

Really, what standard are you basing this on?  Their password requirements seem pretty standard to any other website or web application..

I don't have an issues with the complexity they do enfore. That's good. Not allowing 'special' characters. e.g. 'space', '!' , '%', etc. Is not normal. Maximum of 19 Chars. Eliminates length of passphrase I typically use.

Is it huge deal? no. But why would you put these limits in place? It's quaint. it's not 'best practice' (as much as I hate to use that term).

And the email activation code that you have to copy and paste - quaint and weird. Pretty much every site you register to these days emails a link that you click to activate. And the ones that don't are just a bit weird and give me the feeling like they're not developed by someone who is really in-touch with things.

Maybe it's just me. Maybe I'm the weird one. It's happened before. :)

Typing the activation code is quite common. But in those cases it is usually a very short code. 4 to 5 chars only.

I've heard quite a few radio ads for wheedle, but if it wasn't for geekzone I would have no idea what on earth it was. All it is is people saying how they wheedle everything now.

Doesn't like hyphenated names either, keeps deleting the hyphen/dash :-( Wheedle doesn't want me as a customer?

I'm not sure if this is the right place... but I got all motivated and hacked what I think is a viable Trademe competitor the other weekend. I thought I'd get some feedback here before I expose myself to ridicule by releasing it. ;)

The things that I've done differently:

  • Facebook authentication required to buy or sell (but not browse)
  • Show how many NZ-based Facebook friends a seller has - this is a sort of 'social trust metric'
  • Simplified listing creation (one page with inline file uploading)
  • Buy now only (I did this to keep things simple, could add auctions later)
  • Cross-posting of listings onto your Facebook page, so that your friends can see what you're selling
  • Discount for friends - so if a friend buys your item, you can optionally give them a 5, 10, 20% discount
  • No listing fees, unlimited photos, success fee of ?% if someone outside your friend circle buys your item

The idea comes from a friend who was selling up all his stuff and heading off overseas, he found the Trademe listing process to onerous, plus shipping goods etc etc, he just wanted to be able to quickly list a bunch of things and sell them to people who could come and pick them up. I also saw 'soldsie', which lets people with Facebook pages easily list and sell stuff on their pages, and I just thought, a direct frontal assault on Trademe (like Wheedle is doing) is  retarded, but doing something that helps people easily sell stuff to friends could be a way to get started.

Anyway - what do people think? Shall I release it and let you all ridicule me? ;)
