gundar: Instead of everybody dreaming, why don't we make a list of awesome features, get a few votes and start a community sourced project? Facebook, HP, Apple, they weren't the first of their kinds and they all started on their owners money in a basement (or so I am told).

Community sourcing or open sourcing an engine has potential for competing with TradeMe.

It could equally be developed as a closed source business.

Either way this leaves individual players to concentrate on the business side of things with their own unique market models and front ends to support that.

That is something I would be interested in contributing to. It would be a lot of fun doing that.

That is something I would be interested in contributing to. It would be a lot of fun doing that.

Yes an open source application like Wordpress that could be scaled but installed on a WAMP installation would be kind of cool.

Something that could be themed.

I agree that a sensible closed source solution would also make some sense, but would that fly?

It could. There is no shortage of competitors with business models and unique relationships wanting to enter the space.

Either closed or open will lower the barrier to entry and will allow competitors with innovative business models to focus on their unique business model and the front end required to deliver it.

I don't think there is much doubt some of the current crop of competitors would exchange their current set of development problems for a well maintained backend under the right circumstances and conditions.

Here is another trading startup that was setup in the last month. geta.co.nz . A better name than the other two.

Massive initial uptake? IMHO, only a social network venturing into the auction segment could disrupt the user-base of Trade Me.

Some new 'killer app' service, and it isn't going to be easy or cheap. It's going to be a very long term return and probably the margin isn't going to be huge.

One option is a global player, it is going to have to be someone with deep and I mean Google, Apple, Facebook deep pockets, uses New Zealand as the test bed before making the service global.

Some options:

One of the established players, see above, decides to move into the online trading space as an add on to existing services to try to create a One-Stop-Shop.
A new service with integrated buy -> pay -> ship for all purchases you don't want to pick up. Probably integrated with a freight partner.
International trading integrated with seamless buy -> pay -> ship.
Find a way to integrate digital content sales in some form.
Try to use it as a way to sell tickets by auction, this is fraught with problems.

All of these are hard and more likely to fail than succeed but if you want to take on the incumbent it is going to take something radical.

I don't think TradeMe with social networking will work because you are would be putting the cart before the horse. It would work better if an established player added trading as a sideline.

The other thing which almost goes without saying is execution. Any competitor will get one chance to get it right from day one. This service must do what is says on the tin from day one.

I think the technology.

T&E owned print, but didn't understand web.

Trade Me got into web early and own that.

I think the answer is tied to what's after the web
