Certainly a possibility, and sounds like something Geta will consider.

I'm sure Trade Me would argue that the feedback rating system itself (Of which the feedback rating is a product) was created by them and is their intellectual property, as is the feedback rating produced.

Not sure if it would fly or not, guess we will see if they do decide to go down the legal route.

Risky for a new start-up to spend lots of money on lawyers for this in the early days tho. You don't want to blow a million bucks on lawyers only to lose, and then go under. Of even win, and then still go under.

What would be big money for a start up is loose change to Trade Me, who have their own in house council as well.

I think google would have a good chance if they launched googleauctions or something similar, google has very deep pockets and they sure wouldnt go under.

I suggest that Google has to take care what they do these days.

A decade ago the DoJ looked at Microsoft for anti-trust issues.

How many markets is it ok for Google to walk into with its power and just take over?

Currently they own internet search, they're taking it to the phone os market, they own mapping and they're bringing it in the email space.

Just how many spaces do we want Google running?

Community sourcing or open sourcing an engine has potential for competing with TradeMe.

It could equally be developed as a closed source business.

Either way this leaves individual players to concentrate on the business side of things with their own unique market models and front ends to support that.

That is something I would be interested in contributing to. It would be a lot of fun doing that.

Sorry for the bump guys. Does anybody know whether Wheedle is based on open source..?

And I think that the only way to make this thread happen would be a 100% open-source solution. So that everybody can contribute modules against low (or no) costs.

Making the site is easy. It gets hard (and costly) when you need to setup support, moderation, doing things to maintain the integrity of your site like following up on scammers and advertising.

I don't think scamming, security or workflow will be the main issues. I think your biggest issue will be the Kiwi customer :)
If you read back through history there are so many B2C web initiatives that have failed, except one.. Apart from that there is still a very vibrant 'Mall culture' in NZ. A lot of Kiwi's shop the old-school way.

They are a tough bunch to lure away from anything that they've come accustomed to. It's all about the Warehouse, Farmers, Count Down and Telecom out there. Let's hope Kim Dotcom can elevate the younger population and crack open some minds. Even Mega.co.nz is not Kiwi enuff for most Kiwi's.
