Hi Guys

I work in a media agency in Auckland (we manage media budgets for several large companies) and I have a concept that I'd like to get feedback from the community on to gauge interest and get opinions on. So here it is.

Assuming the inventors, developers and tinkerers of the world need funds to get their projects off the ground, a potential source of finance that has not yet been explored is from advertisers.  Advertisers are seeking innovation in their advertising and technology is more and more what drives this. Plus there is the need to deliver more relevant and entertaining advertising to consumers. To me there seems to be a synergy because you conceivably have what they need in terms of innovation and they have what you need being money and exposure.

So I have an idea to try and connect your projects with advertisers which is to present them to clients and if they are interested then a partnership could be discussed. I do not envisage it including ownership of IP or equity (altho it could lead to that?) but more a 'rental' type arrangement.

Now these projects would need to be in a completed, tested, ready to go-to-market state, not ideas or half-formed ones (this ain't venture capital but think of it as a foot up which could lead to VC). It could be a gadget, a web or mobile app/site, software or service etc. The project should focus on one of 2 key areas. It's either innovative, zany and will get attention (advertising campaigns) and/or it's innovative and it makes their business operate smarter (business development). What are your thoughts and opinions?

It is a great idea. Ad supported games have not worked very well. A direct relationship will be beneficial for both parties. Consider presenting to the Auckland game developer meetup.

Could this have a negative effect on sales, tho? Many things in this day and age come in the free, but ad supported or pay up and no ads format - and consumers don't like paying for something AND getting ads as well.

That said, it can work. Amazon Kindle for example sells in two variants for each model. An ad-free version, or a sponsored version that displays ads while the device is idle, which comes at about a $20-30 discount.

I think that's the point really. My guess is Michael will be oriented towards subtle brand association rather than the in your face PPC annoying irrelevance users have come to expect.

Thanks for the reply. I see your point re ads in a paid environment. In this concept, the way in which we'd use the game / software etc wouldn't be via a pay-to-play/view consumer model - it would be free in so far as it would form part of an advertising campaign and so any sort of paid model would be prohibitive to people participating which an advertiser does not want.

Yes it would be more a subtle approach in that we'd want to give the consumer a good entertaining experience that they would want to engage with rather than bombard them with interuptive messaging like banners. If we are talking about a game for example, we'd be designing a campaign where the game itself was the advertising idea because it was so cool and for example it had the client's product integrated into it (like an Audi in Grand Tourismo) - just a basic example but we're looking for cool innovative inventions and not just canvasses for ads

I actually have a project this may fit. My project Smartorder is open to consumers across a broad spectrum, basically anyone that eats. I distil from your post that you match apps with advertisers or innovative mediums to deliver advertising. 

You could have in app advertising but this would require sufficient income to pay the retailers portion of the service, so basically you could stroll into any retailer and say they could have online ordering for free if they accept advertising.

In app advertising itself is no innovation, but keep in mind that each order is printed on a receipt printer and each could have advertising targeted for region or demographic, you have power over the amount of advertising so you could print a unique coupon code or such on the receipt.

Again, probably not that innovative, however the power is when a majority or retailers have a printer onsite. I am not about to divulge on a public forum my evil plan but you will have a truly unique and targeted market that can't ignore you. Neya ha ha
