I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere yet, but the Auckland Startup weekend is on May 10th this year. The event is a hackathon where attendees pitch ideas and work on them in teams over 54 hours. At the end of the weekend the finished results are presented to "local entrepreneurial leaders".

Great post and the perfect forum too because Startup Weekend Auckland are actually keen to have a few more designer types on board. Tech tickets are also still available while I believe non-tech tickets have sold out! Designers and techies create a good balance for teams and good balance = good chance of successful outcomes. So go for it: Here is the link to the shout out for designers for those interested: http://auckland.startupweekend.org/2013/04/12/design-the-squiggly-line/

Besides building a product and maybe creating a company Startup Weekend is also great fun :)
