I have just started a Website hosting company Softhost.co.nz. I used to work as a systems admin for one of New zealands largest hosting company which gives me a lot of experience in handling customers and keeping services running smoothly.

This enterprise has started due to a number of frustrations that I have encountered along the way.

Such as over priced domains and hosting plans that sound great but are truly more than is required but instead of adding a smaller plan the idea is increase the disk space but keep the price. Make people think thats great but in reality a lot of the websites out there still will not need half the space provided or half the traffic which is great for the hosting company because they can oversell the disk space and traffic.

I have developed and designed a number of websites for small companies and have found that the ideal size is about 250MB disk Space and less than 1GB of traffic per month.

This gives upto 100MB for basic email storage over a weeks worth of business emails  and 150MB for a standard wordpress site with blog and 5 - 10 pages (wordpress is actually less than 20MB if developed correctly the only disk space used is with the blog and photo uploads).

The Best deals I found in New Zealand were $3.95 for 50MB disk space or $6.95 for 500MB Disk space but nothing in between and both companies charge a small fortune for domain registrations. both where abovet $30 for a .co.nz Domain.

My Goal is to allow both good prices for website hosting and domain registrations so you can keep everything in one place and not worry about multiple locations for everything.

Good luck with your startup!

Quick question: Is backup a part of your service? With a database driven website and with a bullseye platform like WordPress, Joomla etc. - being able to restore a site from backup is important.

Thanks

Yes I have 7 days backups available at cost, customers are also able to run their own backups within cpanel.

There is also a great backup script that I used for managed customers this is on the cpanel forums. http://forums.cpanel.net/f49/update-cpanel-backup-script-justin-cook-max-hedroom-if-can-help-135265.html

You can use Amazons Web Services AWS and get a server up and running and use that to store your backups or set up an ftp server at home and use that.

As an added Note I have never relied on a hosting provider for backups as it will always cost and will take some time for it to be completed If I have my own backups I can quickly pull it out and upload it with ease.

Another option would be to go with a paid website back up utility such as BackUp Smart (I have not used it)
