power consumption desktop app

So just tossing the ball around here

Comments , thoughts on a "app" that measures approximate power consumption of your computer installation.

I say approximate as actual live without installing one of those devices in the power box is not available yet? Correct me if I am wrong

This app, you would enter what you have running say 3 monitors, 2 boxes, ups etc and the average price of your power per unit

would show cost per time frame, minute hour etc

+1 for the above site. It's usually my go to. Although I wouldn't say no to an updated version of that. One that is better looking and a bit more user friendly (jQuery all the things!). A desktop version would be a bit overkill imo.

Ok thanks thats a much better idea a website and also easier for me to create. The extreme website is good for techies I would want to aim a little more main stream. The results would be more approximate but accurate enough to be acceptable. For my own vendetta against the power companies It would be intresting to do a comparison price of running a pc in london new york Oz for example.

Ok so thanks of to find a suitable program app in wordpress (my weapon of choice) etc to create the result.

By all means go ahead but I strongly suggest to limit the number of items available for query. If the platform is built right, adding additional inventory to your database should be straight forward. Apple products might be a good way to start off as there is a limited number of hardware combinations you could have and people can mix and match to find out the consumption.

Also there needs to be consideration of power loss as not all devices are 100% efficient.

Other question you probably want to address is the market - do people care that it costs 47 cents to charge an iPhone a year? (http://money.cnn.com/2014/09/25/technology/mobile/iphone-6-charger/index.html)

I agree that power companies are overdue for a revolution of some sort - not sure what that might be but we are seeing restlessness from the general public suggesting there has to be a better way. That along with the financial institutions for retail.

It needs something similar like Uber for transportation to disrupt the big players

I have always dumped all apple users into the tree hugging. wife and 2 kids, corporate job, anal thinking bracket. :) Of course i have an Ipad and a macbook pro and i'm in the screw the planet divorced self employed mindless bracket.
So its hard to figure if they are the ones that wtch the pennies or like to be able to sit and think "wow this costs me $10 a day to run!"

I was going to go for a simple approach like

As for the power companies I read that in queensland they had there first negative power bills

That is cheap and it does what you perhaps need without running any soft on PC. Just Plug & Play and you can input cost per KWH in New Zealand and have your pricing.
I think the price was about $60 NZD. I got my brand new on sale in Harvey for $5

You could do some way cool stuff with an app/gadget automatic device selection + maybe a web backend to tie devices together.

Web alone is ok but you will need to get creative with the UI to make device selection graphical and fun.

There is nothing worse than those fill in the multiple boxes estimators imo.
