A year has passed and we are still around. Thank you for the feedback last time, it is super appreciated.
After hundreds of orders, a couple warranty cases that were solved within 3 days max (lots of very happy customers) we seek your feedback once again.

We meanwhile split GadgetKiwi into these two sites:

gadgetkiwi.co.nz
pc.gadgetkiwi.co.nz

The PC site sells brand products, ships from NZ (usually orders arrive within 1-2 days after ordering) and offers the same quality local stores would. Absolutely no grey imports.
The gadget site sells all sorts of imports (stored in NZ so fast shipping). We do offer Warranty, too.

Our problem is that sites like pricespy and priceme create dozens and dozens of clicks due to our tasty prices. But then don't create many sales.
This costs us tons.

So here we are, asking you guys for help once again.
Great prices, great online support, great warranty.

How can we create more sales and spread the word without drowning in adwords costs?
What comes to your mind when looking at the sites? Would you buy there, yes/no, why?

Kind Regards,
Garry, Eric, Rose

A couple of things I found right away.

  • Not a very good call to action on listing pages (like the first page of Gadgetkiwi.co.nz). You should have "Add to cart" on the products right there.
  • You need to clean up the layout of the store a bit. On Gadgetkiwi.co.nz the product display is messy. You would probably do well to get a designer to help you out with it. For pc.gadgetkiwi.co.nz one of the things that looks odd is how the logo doesn't really integrate into the layout.
  • Show freight prices before the customer needs to enter contact information. A lot of people feel like they are signing up when giving this info to you, and if they don't know what they are signing up for (the full cost) they will shy away from finishing the transaction.
  • Why are you displaying prices excl. GST? If your main market is consumers you should be showing incl. GST prices. You might loose some people that don't read the fine print in the checkout when the GST suddenly appears. (I know you show both prices, but you really should make sure to avoid confusion)
  • Contact information. I look for an address and easy access to get in contact with a company. You are not half bad, but an easier "Contact us" (in top menu) would probably do you good. Be as transparent as possible on your shop, that builds trust.
  • When trying to access the cart I had to wait for a long time then got a "504 Gateway time-out". So you have some technical issues to figure out.

I agree with the comments above, especially:
- The layout feels quite cluttered
- Prices need to be GST inclusive. I know many people who just simply will not shop from stores that show exclusive prices by default.

Your menu item 'Adult' should be gated.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

First fifty people to reply to this thread get a good quality, well emblazoned "gadgetkiwi.co.nz" t-shirt?

What comes to your mind when looking at the sites? Would you buy there, yes/no, why?

jarledb nails this with all of this points, especially the one about GST.

Also, I'd suggest replacing the word "painfully" on your pc.gadgetkiwi site (where you talk about site design flaws) with "any" as the first word isn't good grammar but also comes across as quite self-derogatory. This doesn't inspire confidence. The only other thing I'd say about your sites in general is that I find the gadgetkiwi site to be too cluttered. Perhaps think about having the space between the product tiles increased a little?

Would I buy there? Probably not. I don't like that I'd have to multiply every item I might be interested in by a factor of 1.15 to get the true cost (excluding freight) to me. Don't make me shag around as that's a fast way to make me go away, just give me the full price.

Agreed on the GST. On Gadgetkiwi I did not see anywhere on the front page suggesting those prices were GST exclusive. I would close the page and look elsewhere if I clicked one of them to buy and it took me through to the product page which told me that the GST inclusive price was higher.
I feel it is misleading and bait advertising to show your front page without GST inclusive prices. I won't be back unless you fix it, and then, how will I know? Because I wont be checking back - you have lost this customer.

Also, on Gadgetkiwi, I clicked on the banner to take me back to the start, and it doesn't work. I clicked on the HOME thing that appears above the banner and it took me to the Bitcoin page. Another fail.

What's the difference between imports and grey imports?

My bad. There is none. Was just trying to say that our PC products are from New Zealand suppliers so you will receive full Warranty.

I agree with most of the comments above. My 2cents of feedback:

  • The sites are too cluttered!
  • Your should remove the Adult category completely, you only have 1 product in there - and I don't think it matches in all that well with the "gadget" name.
  • Obviously add the GST into your prices
  • Have a way of showing shipping up front, without the need for login. I see you have flat rates. Maybe just round them out to $5 flat price shipping in NZ - don't worry about which courier/rural.
  • Update your About Us page. I think you have a spelling mistake on the question about imports. It says: Those products are clearly marked in the bottom right of the description window with 'introducing' where I think it should say "Imported"??
Would I buy there? No I'd say not. Even if I was interested in these kind of products, I would be shying off due to the GST, lack of contact details (Phone/address etc) and most of the above.

On the positive side, I did like reading your testimonials on your product pages at the bottom

With a bit of a tidy up/refine I'd say you'd have a good platform to work from.

I am actually in the market to buy a new computer right now, i have a particularly tight budget, i think i know what i want and have been scouring the web looking for the best possible deal, the scary thing is I did not even know you guys existed until this thread so it is safe to assume the dots are not connecting between you and your potential customer base

As for your website it feels snappy and responsive but doesn't inspire me, main thing for me is too many missing images and al lthe fonts are too big and in your face, it's almost there but just needs to mature, I image that on a tablet the page looks a whole lot better than on a 23" monitor which could be part of my issue

What could you do to improve business? Well... :P Like i mentioned I'm in the market for a budget focused system, I am limited to either buying a pre-built collection of components that almost suit me or paying individual pricing for the exact components I want.

Something that nobody seems to offer is the ability for people like me to select their components and then receive a 'package deal' or discount off that. This leaves the a situation where it is best to cherry pick components from a few shops to get the best price overall.

Thank you all for the feedback. It's highly appreciated.
Looks like we have a bit of work ahead of us :)

Wade: We have very tight margins, so package deals are not really possible. But sure, some customers ask and they always walk away with a good deal. Just drop us a mail with the components you are after.
We do have a barebone kit section. Motherboard+CPU+Ram .. those combos are cheaper than anywhere else in New Zealand.

A common angst I have is having to page through several pages within categories. You can set to view a number of items per page up to 100, but not ALL items. That being perhaps you don't have more than 100, but if you grow then it will happen. I like to have them all showing so I can quickly scan through them. Your categories may not exactly match mine.

Not a big fan of that idea, too many sizes etc. Would be awesome advertising though. But I don't want to consume your time for no reward. I'll come up with something.
