I'm helping set up a website for an event being run next year. Most attendees will be from overseas, Oz, States, Europe mainly.

They'll be able to register on the website and pay the registration through the website. Initially I'd planned on using PayPal, The platform we have used to build the website can handle Authorize, Square, Pay Pal and Stripe.

Stripe was my first choice but they don't support New Zealand based organisations.

Has anyone one here used any other the other three options? What pros and cons are there?

I always prefer to pay unknowns with paypal, so I would say go for that.

Yes PayPal has a good name and I agree to some extent.

This site won't be an unknown as such, the people visiting it will be doing so because they know about the event. They aren't paying some unknown identity.

I like the idea where Stripe pays into your bank account in a seamless manner and the transaction appears seamless to the "customer", but it's not supported here.

While I'll probably go the Pay Pal way before doing do I'd like to get some feedback on the all the options.

Choose a platform that supports payment express, that way you can use you own nz merchant account, so the credit card fees should be less too.

We've already chosen the platform, it gives the options in my original post. I was looking for feedback on those options.

In nz there are very few processing companies to choose from unfortunately.

DPS.net.nz aka www.paymentexpress.com is the major NZ one
Minor ones are
eway.io/nz aussie company
www.braintreepayments.com - a paypal company

either way you will also need a credit card merchant facility with your bank to settle funds into. these aren't real easy to get and will cost ~$50/mth and most banks require a 12 month contract term....

So no its not real easy to do for casual payments.

I would find a event/ticketing type company (eventbrite?) who will manage sales for you and take payments in their name. They'll take a cut, but for a one off event it will be easier and cheaper and less stress.

Well I know SWIPE wasn’t on your original list, we would recommend it as we use it and it was extremely easy to set up, and no merchant account was required (which is a huge bonus- as they take a while to set up and the terms with you bank can be expensive).

We looked at Paypal as well, however found allot of kiwis are put off by it because they would instantly question if the website was credible in particular if it was the only available payment choice, in part because they feel Paypal is more associated by international websites and not New Zealand ones. since introducing swipe we have only had 1 out of about 500 customers ask if we had Paypal. So we are extremely happy with swipe, and there online portal is extremely easy to use for card not present transitions and refunds.

I feel PayPal is safer than most of other transaction processors. I can't understand why some people have this thing about the service.

As mentioned in the original post we were only considering options supported by the platform we were using. Swipe wasn't on the list.

We have gone with Pay Pal, so far so good. Over 90% of the payments will be from overseas. I don't see why Pay Pal should be an issue for New Zealand users. It's very well recognised.
