Hi all, I'm Jonathan from MyRepublic, a new fibre-only ISP planning to set up shop in NZ. We've had a pretty good run over at the Singapore branch, and are looking to enter the NZ internet market as we believe that the UFB network allows us to jump in and shake the market up while offering superior services at affordable prices.

With that, we're posting here to check what you guys are looking for in your ISP - be it stability, speed, price or any extra services, and implementing them when we start offering fibre broadband plans to the public. Any feedback that you guys can offer will be invaluable!

There are two pricing plans for fiber in NZ that are arbitrarily based on download/upload speeds: 30/10 and 100/50.

The difference in cost between the two plans is $30 a month. If you want to shake up the very cosy relationship that exists between the current ISP's offering UFB, you could win customers over by refusing to offer plans based on speed and instead offer a single uncapped speed plan priced at what the 30/10 plan sells for.

New Zealand subscribers have been ripped off for decades with prices based on download speed.

I see from your Singapore website you offer 1 Gbps download speeds for $60. If you show that initiative here in NZ you will be a winner.

If you follow in the foorsteps of the ISP's already in this country and only offer 30/10 and 100/50 then you will have no point of difference and there will be no reason for any Kiwi to support a foreign-owned ISP. You should not bother entering the NZ market unless you can offer something substantially better than what the existing ISP's sell. Demonstrate a good business case for us to join you, and we will.

When you startup, have a fibre offering on all the Fibre Co's, not just Chorus then one day expand to the other companies.

Offering wise, unlimited net with no traffic shaping and VoIP :)
Also have a talk to Sky and offer TV streaming similar to Vodafone TV.

Huh? I think full speed plans have been in place since around 2007 when ADSL2+ was introduced as part of the cabinetisation project.

The only limits in NZ are data caps, and plenty of smaller ISPs offer unlimited plans these days. If you offer something for nothing (ie unlimited data), that's the value you are placing on it (everything is free and there is no cost in providing service). If only Electricty, Gas, Water, Roads, Education all came at zero effective cost.

Looks like just the opposite:

MyRepublic is expected to charge based on the speed of its services, rather than using data caps, which is the norm in the local market, and anticipates this will be attractive to content providers.

Although as plambrechtsen says above, I don't agree with the "speed" assertion that you've made.

Mr Baker tells NBR MyRepublic will work with all four UFB companies - Chorus, Enable, Northpower Fibre and Wel Netorks' Ultrafast Fibre.

Why do you think uptake of UFB is so pathetic and well well below what the Government predicted? Why is it that fibre already runs past hundreds of thousands of homes but the uptake is still something like a single digit percentage?

Why can't people be bothered to accept a 100% free install and free wireless router to switch from copper to fiber?

Well my guess is that the difference in speed between what they get with their existing copper ADSL connection and the 30/10 fiber plan is insufficient to motivate them to make the switch. But if the 100/50 plan was priced at the 30/10 plan, more people would see the speed difference and switch to fiber, that would make it truly worthy of being called "Ultra fast broadband". But people sure aint racing to pay a $30 premium to get 100/50.

Meanwhile Chorus, is crying poor, threatening not to fulfill its contract with the Government to roll out fiber, because the Commerce Commission has ruled that its copper ADSL prices are overpriced and have to be reduced.

they will have to offer the same wholesale fibre plans and pay the same costs that everybody else can get.

lol, Wrong. RSP's can add EIR blocks to any package you want.

myrepublic are only going to be able to offer 100/50 or 30/10 plans as that is the regulated speeds as per what is specified by CFH.

My personal view is NZ as a country is a low wage economy that places little to no value in the technology sector only milk exports. Lets just take a look at our horrific child abuse and child poverty rates that all go hand in hand for a poor outcome for the non-trivial size of our lower socio economic block in NZ. I find it deeply disturbing the number of times I have spoken with people on the Telecom Facebook site, telling them they have poor internal wiring and a $150-200 master filter will resolve their broadband issues. They balk at the cost and continue to complain.

When we sort those problems in our society... Then I can see the uptake in Fibre growing. But the continued widening of the richest and poorest and loss of our brightest over the ditch doesn't seem to indicate that is going to happen any time soon.
