I'm looking at getting a covered area built for part of our deck (around 18m2 covered), anyone have experience with the ClearVue roofing (http://www.clearvue.co.nz/system/grey-tint-glazing-panel/) or other similar plastic roofing (edit: another I found: http://www.suntuf.co.nz/range/suntuf-grey-tint/)? We're in a reasonably high wind area, and its very exposed to the sun, ideally we want something that provides us with a bit of shade from the sun in hot days and shelter from the weather, including less weathering of outdoor furniture. I don't know how well this will do the job (the one I've linked mentions 50% light/70% heat transmission), but it seems like a large umbrella isn't going to cut it unless I get a cantilever one with tilting, and even then I'm not sure how well it would stand up to the wind.

main problem is the cost of building the support structure. Buying the Suntuff plastic roofing would probably be the cheapest bit. Also AFAIK if your are going to have over 10m2 covered area, you will also need to get a building consent.

The Schedule 1 limit is 20m2. If you are building a deck that will be covered some details are different. A deck needs support where a roof also needs uplift control so the amount of concrete might differ.

Or sails. We have a pair of 3x3s side by side usually between Labour weekend and Easter to shade the deck.1 umbrella only covered the table for about 30 mins. Put in decent anchor points

Yeah after thinking about it some more I think shade sail(s) could be the better option. Will get a quote for that first, I don't have any decent existing anchor points so I'll skip trying it myself and get one of the local companies to take a look.
