I’m finally getting around to looking for a second battery for my Ryobi lawn mower; having a single battery is fine when the lawn’s not growing fast, but at the moment it’s crazy… Took me three charges to get the whole lawn done a couple of weeks ago, and it looks like it’ll be the same this time around (once the rain goes, that is…).

But, man, the prices at Bunnings are fairly steep: $369 for a 6 Ah battery.

I have two questions:

* Given Bunnings is the sole retailer of Ryobi products, are there any decent alternative sources? I see a TM seller has the same capacity for $270, but I have no idea of quality.

* Does anyone know if larger capacity batteries fit in the Ryobi machines? I’m assuming the 6Ah does (I have a 5 Ah currently), but not sure about the 9.

Many thanks.

No idea about the quality of the TM ones, but I picked up a genuine 6Ah battery for mine a while back to supplement the 4Ah one it came with.  They fit in the 46cm Brushless mower.  THe bigger batteries come with a battery lid extender that fits under the flip up battery cover to give it enough height to cover the bigger unit.  Mine didn't need the extender for the 6Ah so that was less fiddling.

I found that it was cheaper to buy a battery drill complete with 5Ah battery than to buy a stand alone battery

Sorry, should have mentioned mine is the 36v model that uses a specific battery not used in other equipment, unlike the One+ range, so buying another device with the same battery isn’t an option (that I’m aware of); I believe geoffwnz has the same model as me.

Perhaps a cordless battery mower isn't the best choice for your lawn? One 5ah easily does my lawn....charging three times would make it a mission! Or perhaps your battery is severely reduced capacity?

We pay a lot for batteries here compared to the USA for what looks like the same thing. The 36/40v ones are also over the 100 watt hour limit to be able to ship them easily which doubly sucks.

Will be interesting to see what the California ban on garden equipment will do for the range of products soon, so if its not an urgent replacement there may be more bands with better grunty options coming out soon. I'm going to hold of on replacing my petrol mower for another year to see what comes up.

We got the below Ryobi from Bunnings, strangely no longer appears on the Bunnings website:

https://www.ryobi.co.nz/products/details/18v-one-40cm-brushless-hp-lawn-mower-tool-only-olm1840bl

We just have a small flat lawn, and since I already had several Ryobi One+ tools and batteries I wanted to stay in the same 18V family of tools - and this was the only one in that range that didn't look like a toy. It's 40cm cutting radius is the biggest in the 18V range, but that's still smaller that a standard petrol mower so I certainly wouldn't want to go smaller than that. The extra boost using two batteries presumably helps (though I don't understand why NZ never got the the model that actually gave 36V using two 18V batteries).

Take the advertised runtime with a grain of salt, as it's the "no load" runtime. But having a small lawn I've never had to put it to the test.

One of the best features is that it folds up and stands upright for storage, so takes up very little space in our small garden shed.

If you specifically want to stay in the 18V One+ family (like I did) it's good and I don't regret the purchase. Otherwise you can get a 36V Ryobi brushless with a 46cm cutting radius for the same money.

We did for about 6 months a few years back, then it disappeared never to surface again.

I've had a 56v / 47" EGO mower for over 4 years. I've replaced the blade once. I have 3 batteries (2 x 4ah and 1 x 5ah). I have two fast chargers. I can mow continuously, swapping batteries, until my legs give out.

I mulch. I've never used the grass catcher.

I don't know what this would cost to buy today. The models have changed slightly, too.

Ryobi stuff seems to disappear from bunnings site when no stores have it in stock, but you can still access them thru the hell that is special orders if you have the supplier code. A few items show on the website as special order but that isnt the whole lot. Seems to be no connection between the ryobi site and the bunnings one to let you know that however.

Ah that's the one I wanted to buy but couldn't find it. I just assumed it was out of stock.

Just don't expect Bunnings to support the consumables. I had a Ryobi edge trimmer which I bought from Bunnings, but they didn't carry spare blades and as they were the only authorised retail agent for that range of Ryobi products getting a replacement blade was a real pain.

Really? they have 2 types of regular edger blades and 2 expand-it ones available at the moment

Perhaps they carry them now, I don't know, I avoid going to Bunnings if at all possible after my experience with the replacement blades. I eventually solved the problem by complaining to Ryobi and their rep ended up ensuring there was a supply at Bunnings to meet my immediate needs. Who knows what happened after that supply ran out. I sold it and bought a petrol one. That solved any future problems.

I've been looking around for an electric lawnmower to replace my trusty ICE which I've just donated to the tenants for a rental property - hence have read through this thread. Was also in Bunnings at the weekend and they had this model as a promotion:

https://ozito.com.au/products/pxc-2-x-18v-brushless-steel-deck-lawn-mower-kit/

It's not listed on their website so I imagine it's just a short promotion.

Seems to get good reviews on the Bunnings Oz website though - anyone got any thoughts on how it might go in NZ? Steel deck and 36V  -seems like it could do the trick.

Thanks in advance.
