Good to see you no longer store your wood around and against the fire ;).

I remember seeing your video on YT when you first installed it.

I think mine is about twenty minutes before I start the downdraft, but I am using a different model.  I usually make sure there is no ash around the down-pipe, and actually place two semi-intermediate sized pieces of wood at the front and back of the top section, then use about 12 pieces of Solid Energy type kindling in a lattice pattern then pop a little lucifer/firestarter in the middle of the structure.  Lazily I put a couple more intermediate sized pieces of wood (usually light pine or poplar) on top of the structure but being sure to leave air space.  I light the lucifer, then leave the door in an ajar position.

I think the kindling is usually burnt to a bright embers and the intermediate pieces of wood are well alight and on their way and I close the door to activate the downdraft.  It is usually about twenty minutes, and I don't really use the LED light as a guide though this could already be green for a bit already.  Depending on how lazy I am, I might pop more wood in before I pop the downdraft down, but it just depends.

It took a bit of trial and error at the start, but I mostly have it down, but I think it'll take a little while before you get used to what works best or when you think the downdraft should be initiated.  Depending on what wood I have the routine can change a little.

This is on a Ferva Saturn, so the door closing and downdraft activation is pretty much in the same movement.

Yann...how loud is the fan in your Saturn? We installed one several months ago...fan seems to be very loud.

Is it worthwhile using a stove fan on an uleb fire or do they get too hot. The Peltier ones may die above 350 C though the Stirling one should be okay.

I believe they use Peltier modules to generate the power for USB charging though the stove ones I've seen only do 3V.

I saw this video on using a pellet tray inside a standard wood burner http://www.azwood.co.nz/Pellet+Tray.html

Any reason not to use one inside a ULEB if you don't block the central downdraft opening?

Another question, can you use a stove kettle ontop of the top plate of your ULEB?

Apparently mine doesn't get hot enough to boil water using one of these kettles but the room gets really hot.

I doubt my Mystique gets hot enough for a pot. I'm sure I can touch the top plate.

That's interesting.  So, is most of the heat generated in the secondary combustion chamber so it doesn't get to heat the top plate?  Do you have a stove thermometer to measure the temperatures of the plate and flue?

How did it go?

And I also bought a stove fan to use with my Cromwell.  Looks like I'll have to get rid of it now if the top can't even boil water frown

Can't find it. Somewhere in the shed. :)

After being on for 2 hours I did touch the top, and I can palm-tap the top of the plate. It can't be hot enough to boil anything.

I guess that speaks to efficiency of these types of wood burners that the heat is forced into the room and not so much up the flue.
